Thanks for all the responses, they have made interesting reading! I live in N. Ireland but I can sail from any of the ports in Northern Ireland or the Republic. I need the car with me and that is why I wanted to know were the nearest port to Birmingham was.

would have thought the best crossing ( price / time) was more important

If it's an option, I would have thought your best bet would be to drive to the Republic and then do the crossing to Holyhead. From there, it's a straight run to Birmingham down the A5, M54 then M6. The road's been massively improved and it's probably a better journey than crossing to Scotland and then travelling to Birmingham.

Must you really have a car? If so, is it worth comparing the price of a cheap flight to Birmingham and then hiring a car? When doing the comparison, don't forget to factor in the cost of petrol for driving from Holyhead to Birmingham.

Got hubby to look at it last night and we would be best to go from Dun Laoghaire or Dublin to Holyhead. Dad wants a car brought home so we have to take our car and our trailer. This must be the 5th car in less than a year that we have had to go and collect, that is why flying is not an option!! If only all cars could fly

Agree Jo ... that's your best option :)

But the thought of all those bad drivers being able to fly their cars is really, really scary ;)

Make sure you choose your times carefully - between about 6am and 10 am, and then 3pm and 8pm the M54 / M6 is rammed.

I seem to be over in England every month. My hubbys a trucker and when we fly he insists on hiring a car. Even when we went to Gran Canaries he hired a car and we drove about and seen some very interesting sites. We just cannot sun bathe, nothing wrong with it but we just do not have the patience to lie on a beach all day!

If the car to be returned is driveable (and insured, etc?) then surely it would be easier to fly over and just drive it back?

I do not know if the car is driveable, but I am not chancing it!! It is a very very old car. The car will not be insured until it gets to Dad.
