Student Contents Insurance

My son moved into halls yesterday in London SE. His accommodation covers him for basic contents within his room with Endsleigh but of course you can extend this cover to include accidental damage, laptops, etc. Our initial quote came out as £170 a year which I haven't budgeted for. However, he already has his mobile insured so the main issue is that he is studying music and his instruments are worth £3000 plus, way more than £600 included. The quote for this (maximum you can cover is £3000) is £45 for the year and they are covered for accidental damage in and out. This seems reasonable.

My provider, Sainsburys, may be able to add his contents on at an additional cost but I can't get a quote until tomorrow. I don't suppose they'll be any cheaper.

Advice please.

Bumping this as I'm looking for cover in student house (privately rented) for DD - new laptop and a Blackberry being main items which need covering.

Endsleigh want £140 which seems a lot.

    Any recommendations pls?

Another OP recommended cover4students.com - got a comprehensive policy for £57 for the year.

I thought you could add on to your existing house policy as items covered away from home? This is what I had intended?!
    LBM.....sometime in 2013 £27,056. 10 creditors
June 20.....£7,587.....3 creditors left 72% paid

£26,200 on interest only part of mortgage (July 16)...will chip away £17,103
    £49,200 repayment mortgage ( July 16) £37,764

Yes you can with a lot of policies. We've done this for my son and daughter for the last 2 years with Churchill. Just meant it added a bit to the premium.

Yes, I probably can but wouldn't want her to claim on household insurance as (a) the excess is higher (excess is only £10 with Cover 4 Students policy) and (b) they will probably increase premium next year because of any claim.

I could go elsewhere and shop around in the event of a claim but all insurance companies will want to know of any previous claims. Plus I have to pay an additional premium regardless.

Each to their own. This policy worked for me.
