our son, age 6, has just been awarded dla until 2019. Will it be renewed before then? waited so long for the award decision and worried could have to go through it all again soon.

The rules are all changing next year, so anything could happen.0

DLA is remaining for under 16's though. Pip is for people 17-64.
OP, reviews can happen at any time despite the dates given on the award letter but ime is unlikely to be under one year and is usually at least two when the initial award is as long as your is."Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. My son's DLA was awarded at 5 years old for 5 years, then at 10 for another 5 years and then the last award was for 3 years, to take him up to 18 I presume. I didn't have any reviews at all in between awards. Obviously this is only my experience with DLA.0

The DLA dept will not reassess your son before this time unless;
a) you notify them of a change in circumstances, or
b) they become aware of a change of cirs some other way.
Don't forget to notify child tax credits (if you get this) of your son's DLA award as depending on the rate of DLA awarded you may now qualify for a disabled child element and/or a severely disabled child premium.0 -
A certain number of claims each year are chosen, at random, to be re-examined under the Right Payment scheme. This means that no-one can guarantee that your son will not be reassessed but it is certainly hopeful.0
