    Hope both are fully vaccinated!!

She is but Logan still to get second jab.

Both breeders and vet told me to let him meet fully vacc dogs ASAP before he has had his jabs as this really helps the socialisation process. They said many make the mistake in thinking their dogs cannot meet ANY dogs untul a fortnight after 10week jab, that's not true, they can meet a fully vacc dog from day one.

He gets his second jab on Thursday.

Goodness, I'm quite surprised at this. My parents lost a dog to distemper when it was introduced to another (vaccinated) dog before he had had his second injection. Maybe because of this I'm a bit paranoid..

I totally understand the socialisation stuff as there is quite a small window for this, but plenty of time if your second vaccination is at 10 weeks.

    Awwww your puppy is gorgeous.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

They all seem to be recommending contact before the full vaccs now. Lots of vets are also holding 'puppy parties' to let puppies socialise, think they happen between 8-10 weeks. Also every breeder and dog owner (experienced owners) I have spoken to at the recent dog shows I have been at have told me how important it is that the socialise as young as possible and before 12 weeks.

Tbh I am not sure on the whole vaccination thing at all.. as in the crap vets tell you to make sure you get boosters annually. Studies have shown that 3 yearly is sufficient yet they still hassle you to do it yearly. I will look into it more though over the next year til the times comes and decide what I want to do.

I've been looking into using nosodes as opposed to vaccinations.

Vaccinations a whole new thread!! I agree with puppy parties, but these pups haven't been in contact with other dogs. My dogs went to puppy parties at my vets before they had their second jab,. Just that if they are saying 'don't put your pup down on the ground where other dogs may have walked' (which mine does), then it seems to contradict allowing other dogs in contact.

As I said, just my opinion, and I am hypo-sensitive having had my parents lose a dog this way - my father sat up with the pup for 3 nights before he died.

NB - regarding vaccinations, if you are intending putting Logan in kennels at all for holidays, etc, or dog daycare you will need annual vaccinations anyway.

Vaccinations should be thought about on an individual basis. The pup that got distemper may not have got it from the other dog, but from other dogs in the area, Caroline_a.

To put it bluntly, would it be better to have a dog that is sick as a pup (may/may not have caught from other dog), potentially dies (sadly :() or a pup that is kept away from dogs incase he catches something and then becomes aggressive (oh a dog, we don't come into contact with those!!). Aggression will affect him for a lot longer than a health problem would.

Vets and Behaviourists are forever arguing on the matter but the point is please socialise your dog as soon as possible. A big GSD like him will be difficult to control IF he did become aggressive so you want to prevent that.

If he has also been kept on !!!!!es milk until weaned then he will have immunity from her.

Yep breeder said that he should have immunity upto a bout 11 weeks and jabs should be done at 10/11 depending on our own vet (my vet said he does them at 10).

He will never be in kennels, we have a lot of people who will look after him when we go away, I hate kennels, necessity for a lot of people but we are lucky enough not to need them. Anyways vaccs are not something I need to worry about now, got a year to look into :)

The little monkey has just woken up from a long sleep, all the excitement tired him out .

I do agree with the socialisation side, mine went everywhere with me (carried) until a week after their second injections. GSDs that have been unsocialised enough as young dogs can develop fear aggression, so I would reinforce the socialisation message. I'm just very wary having had this experience before of the pup dying, hence why I mentioned it.

OP, are you starting training classes soon with him?

Yeah starting a few weeks after his jabs at a normal training class and then also going to try out the GSD ringcraft club that his breeders run as thinking of showing him, they said to come a few times for free and see what they do and if I think I want to try it. They are very eager to see him grow up also which is nice, a lot of the shows are in the country park near me so even if we don't go ahead with the ring craft I will still take him down to see them
