Light bulb question

My husband informed me today that it's now illegal to sell 40w bayonet candle light bulbs. Is this true ?

We have two BhS glass n brass trad style sherry glass chandeliers bought 10 yrs ago in a sale for £150 each and they put out 200w total each ie 5 x 40w each chandelier and each chandelier is on a dimmer.

Are my chandeliers now useless ? Are there low energy light bulbs out there in candle shape able to be used on a dimmer ? If so are they carried in normal stores or will we have to go to an electrical wholesaler?

I have no idea why OH didn't stockpile bulbs I'm extremely CROSS with him.

What if anything can I do about the bulbs please ?:(

The old style lamps have now been phased out and shouldnt be on sale as they were not energy efficent.

You can still get lamps to fit your fitting but they will be an encapsulated halogen lamp inside a glass "bulb".

There is a loophole - https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2193792/Old-fashioned-lightbulbs-banned-EU-directive-sold-traders-loophole-allowing-renamed.html - but it's worth experimenting with the energy efficient ones. We've saved loads of money over the years by using them.

I'm getting more confused now.. NONE of the bulbs in my house are the traditional light bulb shape they are either golf ball or candle shape.

I don't care whether they are low energy or not I just don't want to have to buy new light fittings throughout the house. None of the ceiling mounted light fittings are more than 12 yrs old, and some of the table lamps are only a year old.

As lomg as it fits the 40w bayonet fitting and isnt too long or wide for the glass and doesn't look like a fluorescent and is fully dimmable I'd be happy.

If I can find a decent priced bulb from wholesaler we'll buy in bulk and send back any that bang immediately.

The sheds have cleared all the old style out. However, its not illegal to sell stock you currently have. Talk to your small elecrical retailer in the high street. If he's got any sense he bought a container load earlier on before this nonsense came in.

    Cheers

Buy LED candle shape bulbs. They'll actually save you money over the life of the bulb (tho that's a very long time) but they will get a great deal cheaper before much longer.

    No.
However it's no longer permitted to manufacture or import most old-style incandescent lamps into the EU and hasn't been for several years, so supplies are pretty much all gone.

However plenty of alternatives are available, including halogen candles which are still permitted, due to them being more efficient. One example being the Phillips EcoClassic range.

There are also LEDs and compact fluorescents.

By far your simplest option is to look out for the new halogen lamps, which are becoming available in many stores.

These are a small halogen lamp mounted into a traditional looking bulb. They are a direct replacement for the old incandescent lamps, and work fine with dimmers.

They are usually slightly lower wattage, because they are more efficient than the old lamps.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

  • All my lamps and light fittings are antique/vintage and I positively refuse to buy energy saving bulbs which are expensive, ugly, give off a horrible light and can't even be dimmed.......I just ordered a bulk load of 'old' incandescent bulbs from eBay.
