car insurance

Mornin All,
Car insurance query, i have full NCB, just sent my mota to carn heaven, so cancelled my car insurance.

I am named driver on my partners car insurance, my question is will i keep my NCB on the back of this or not?

Some years ago, as i had'nt had my own mota insurance for some years i lost all of my NCB and had to start over when i got insurance in my name!

generally your ncb will last two years, being a named driver generally doesn't make any difference

You need to keep any paperwork that confirms you HAD any NCD entitlement. You then provide this to your new insurer as confirmation. As to the time limits, each firm has their own limits, but 3 years is about the limit. After that you start again, but often can get an introduction discount of 20-30%

But most insurers only allow 2 years. So maybe use the policy for a short term and cancel it again to keep it alive?

Otherwise you will lose all your NCB
  • The other option is to alternate who is the policyholder on the other vehicle every year to ensure you keep both your NCDs valid
  • Or insure a group 1 or 2 car for a year every 18 months and cancel after the first month. Should cost you 20% of the annual premium and will keep your NCD valid.

    Too expensive.

Cancel during the cooling off period if you want to do this wheeze (and no point doing it after just 18 months if two years is the maximum allowed).
  • Cancel during the cooling off period and you may just get your original NCD back.

How do you know if its too expensive if you don't know how much the annual premium is?

Just a thought anyway to keep the NCD valid.

Why would you get your "original" NCD back when you've been under cover on a new policy, and had no claim during that cover period?

20% of any premium is a lot to waste! (Even if that's all they would charge)
