Smart meter question

Hello all,

My electricity meter is in a really inconvenient location which makes it hard to read - I have to move an appliance out of the way in order to get the cupboard open. I looked at the cost of getting a meter moved and was shocked at how much it would be (I heard about £800?!)

I know the smart meters are coming from 2014 and that it's possible to get them earlier than that. Do smart meters have to be installed in the same location as the previous meter, or can they put them elsewhere when doing the installation?

No, because moving them any distance would require extending/changing all the cabling between either side between the service head and the consumer unit. They can probably move it a few inches either way, but not put in a totally new position.

£800 maybe if you do 90% of the work!

Anyway when you get a smart meter there will be a remote display thingy with it so that will solve your problem.
