Get yourself a blog such as myspace. This works well if you are attracting 18-35 generation and if you are based online. It's free and has brought me some good business.
Exchanging links with relevant websites, another good one. Getting a simple website if you don’t have one.
If you would appeal to the “older” generation try a press release in the local newspaper. If the article is well written has something to say (related to what you do) and also says by the way you can find it here then they’d probably snap it up. This again works well if it is something specific to your local area.
If you actively sell/provide something, go down to your main street on a busy Saturday afternoon, set up demos/freebies and let people know who you are and what you do. You may get some free press coverage with that as well.
Get flyers created, promo t-shirts with details of everything you do and contact details on it.
How about a sign on your car? Website or company name down the side?
It’s very hard to say anything without knowing what rough market you are in. You don’t have to give specifics if you don’t want to but a general idea of where you sell (online/in a shop), target market (young, old, local, worldwide), what you sell (if it’s an actual product or a service etc) will help us provide more appropriate answers.

Online is your way to go to get yourself out in cyberworld is a must these days. If you need help with a website or SEO of your site check out some of my previous posts.
Local press release is again a good idea as I'm guessing it may be a story of interest.
Leaflets (I'm currently quoted £25 for 1000 but I'm trying to get better) and leave them where you will most likely find your target market (hairdressers, beauty salons etc?).
Do something big in public (someone help me with ideas that would work without being tacky) to attract peoples' attention then maybe get them to sign up there and then (obviously giving them a discount).
Word of mouth is always the best form of free advertising. Make sure whatever you provide is good and no complaints (resolve any quickly) and maybe reward people who bring others to your service. Maybe reward loyalty as it’s easier to keep a customer than attract a new one.
Have an opening event to attract people (if you know people who can help you host it even better) and get them to sign up or pay for a one-off to try for the night as a trial (if your service can work that way)
Give away freebies or discounts initially to start and bring people in. You will find it will suddenly snowball if you have a good product/service and people want it.
Is there any other business that you set up a “if I scratch your back” idea. They advertise for you, you come in and do something for them. Again don’t know if your business would allow that but I’m convinced with most businesses you can have some sort of mutual link where you both win. Just make sure you are not competing with each other, the businesses have to be complimentary.
Use friends and family to help spread the word or any skills that would help with your business.
Signage on the car, on yourself via t-shirts etc is great but make sure the info is easy to remember (website name or name of company). Always carry business cards, never miss an opportunity to advertise.
