Planning a wedding in a year -

Self-explanatory really! We are getting married in less than a year :love:and so far we have:

- booked registrar
- booked venue
- picked best man / bridesmaids
- chosen colour scheme
- read some MSE forums, of course!

That's it really! Lots of brides on here seem to have everything sorted for their 2013 weddings (and 2014/15) but we don't have anything else done at all - I don't feel at all stressed or like there isn't enough time but maybe I am just being a bit naive.... Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

  • Sure there will be lots of advice coming, but to put things into perspective, I got engaged in Feb 2012, and getting married on 12/12/12.
You have more than enough time, especially as the venue is already booked!
Lots of people scared me into thinking I wouldnt be able to get a dress in such a short space of time, and I felt a lot of pressure in wedding shops to order after trying on once, but in the end I went to Copplestone Bridal in Liverpool. They had a good selection and you can take them away same day!

    Good luck and welcome :-)

reformedEffortmaker - yes it is mostly the dress that worries me as loads of people are saying to order one asap - I don't even know type of dress what I want yet!

doublemummy - I am generally quite organised (and have a couple of wedding spreadsheets on the go!) so I will definitely try to follow your advice and stick to the plan

DueMarch11 - we are getting married in August 2013 (so just under a year to go!)

Walk out of the places that tell you you need more than 7 months for a dress as most can be done in 5 and that's with it being made for you! its easily done it just comes round quick just keep busy with it then you wont panic! x
I am not bossy I just have better ideas:p
  • Mine came about like this:

My parents rang us December 2010 to say they were coming on holiday July/August 2011. By February 2011 after being engaged for 5 years and never talking about our wedding we had decided to end my parents holiday with our wedding.

We realised it was the perfect opportunity as it was the 1st time my parents had visited and we didn't know when we'd be able to afford a holiday to Australia.

By the beginning of March we'd found our venue and booked the date with the registrar. By the end of March I had ordered my dress.

So all in all we had 6 mths to plan it all and it was fine, few hiccups along the way but I didn't expect it to be smooth sailing. I loved every minute of planning it all in 6mths.

  • Have you also thought about a photographer? If it's a weekend during August then it's peak wedding season and the most popular photographers are booked up over a year in advance.
  • You've got plenty of time. We decided to get married mid-October and got married end of November. No idea why some people need months or even years to plan a wedding.
  • Planning a wedding is as stressful as you want to make it. We found that we booked all the main things (venue, registrar, photographer, florist, DJ etc) with about 10 months to go, I found my dress with 8 months to go. Then we sat around waiting until invites went out and then with 6 weeks to go that was when all the other details needed sorting. I got a bit stressy in the last few weeks with people dropping out last minute and bridesmaid dresses not fitting but it was fine. I would just make a comprehensive list and work your way through it, you have loads of time! Book the things that are most important to you first, then there is more chance you will get what or who you want as popular photograpers, DJs etc get booked up quick. Oh and congratulations....have fun!

We went three months from proposal (November 27th 2008) to wedding (Feb 27th 2009), not to mention Christmas was in the way, we live in a different country from the one we were marrying in and we had to organise a visa for my husband (he's American) before we could book the registrar. I had a dress, he had a suit, we had a photographer, a cake, a lovely party and aside from problems with the venue that would have arisen no matter how far in advance we'd booked it all went great. No stress :)

I would advise trying on dresses to get an idea of what you like, then looking on ebay. I found I loved a flowing medieval type dress that the shop wanted almost €1000 for; looked on ebay and found it for €90 made to measure and delivered. If the style you like doesn't involve lots of beading, the Chinese sellers might be a good bet. They're often the people who make the designer dresses anyway.

If you'd like a photographer, I'd book one asap - look for one whose portfolio you like. But really, think about what's important to you and book that. Everything else is coasting :)
