Rip off insurance companies!

I am a 22 year old male driver with a Citroen C2 1.1 design. I am currently paying £134 a month car insurance due to a "part claim". Allow me to elabarate and hopefully somebody out there can explain this to me.

Basically one night I was driving home from the gym (it was about a month before I was due to earn my second year no claims bonus) when some driver stopped at green lights and therefore I went into the back of him. I was so shaken up that I only gave HIM my insurance details. So, being the honest person I am, I quickly got home and phoned my insurance company to tell them of what had happend and that nobody was hurt and both cars were able to drive away. Heard nothing regarding the incident or anything so continued on with my renewing car insurance. I managed to get it down to £48 a month with hastings direct (through go compare) Result I thought. However, about a couple of weeks in they sent me a letter stating that I now had to pay 134 a month. When I phoned them and told me no claims where made and I paid for damage to my car myself they said "yes because you reported it it counts as a part claim"

This brings me to my raaaaage, what the hell is a part claim??? No claims where made the other driver did not claim. Anybody help me with this one?

  • The insurance brigade on here will point out that you did have an accident therefore you are an increased risk and therefore your insurance should be higher.

BTW irrespective of the green light you need to concentrate and keep your distance from the car in front allowing for their sudden braking. Sounds like it was an error on your part.

Other guy missed out on a stonewall PI payout, but perhaps he wasn't insured and didn't want to bring attention to himself.

You should have asked at the time (there is no such category as "part claim").

Could you have misheard "third party claim"?

Have you lost your 2 years NCD? If so, then get in touch to find out if there has been a claim made (some insurers remove NCD when a claim is expected, as it would be in this case, and should no claim arrive after a certain time close the case and reinstate the NCD).

You should have disclosed the collision when getting quotes, and must do so in future when getting quotes. Find out if a claim has been made so that you correctly disclose it in future, (and don't inadvertently try and rip off any more insurance companies - they have ways of finding you out!).
  • Hi PoorManWalking,

Thanks for posting, I am sorry to hear your price has increased, I would like to have a look into this for you and find out what has happened. At the time of this accident were you insured with Hastings or another insurer? Please get in contact with some policy details to socialmedia@hastingsdirect.com

    Many Thanks,
    Jamie

  • I suspect what has happened here is that you did the right thing by notifying your insurers (as you are required to do after hitting someone), but you have done this essentially "for information purposes".

The insurer you were with at the time will have opened a claim/incident for this and will be holding a reserve against it (probably a couple of grand). They will be doing this as they will suspect an injury claim could roll in from the other party.

Because of this, your previous insurer is more than likely not giving you the year's no claims discount.

If you have then insured with a different insurer, they have probably contacted your old insurer for verification that you do have 2 years NCD. On being told there is a possible claim outstanding, your new insurer is probably only allowing 1 year NCD and this will be why your premium has rocketed up.

I would suggest you contact your old insurer who you reported the claim to and ask them how long until they draw a line under the matter.

I had this years ago when my wife lost the back end on my car on a roundabout and we left the road and took out a signpost. I notified my insurance of this fact as I had reported it to the police and fully expected the council to come after me for the signpost replacement costs. At renewal over 6 months later, there had been no claim made by the council, but my insurers were aware it often takes councils ages to get their act together and claim back the costs. It was not until about 18 months after the incident that they agreed to draw a line under it and allow my no claims discount as nobody had come forward for the signpost cost and I never claimed for my own vehicle damage.
