Troll police - worse than the trolls?

I've been reading this site for a while now, and one thing that has really stood out is an obsession with trolling (from a highly vocal minority) that seems to be quite unjustified.

Genuine troll posts seem to be reasonably few and far between, given how many posts are made each day.

There's tons of threads that are clearly quite genuine, but it seems that if someone doesn't understand the OPs reasoning/motivation/background/story, they immediately feel the need to post on the thread accusing the OP of being a troll.

The thread is then derailed as others with experience of whatever the OP is on about say that they think the OP is genuine, then the OP comes back and says that they are not a troll, then the thread resumes. Not the end of the world, granted, but since the OPs are often newbies (a breed viewed as highly suspicious by the seasoned troll-catcher), it must be quite hurtful when opening up about a problem to be told that you are making it up for attention.

I personally don't think the 'it's a troll' posts are particularly helpful. Even if it IS a troll, that doesn't mean that the advice given by others isn't relevant to others in the same situation. Virtually every thread on here helps many more than just the OP.

So, in the spirit of 'don't identify a problem if you don't have a solution', how about a troll button? It doesn't need to actually do anything, but the troll-catchers will feel so much better if they can press their troll button every time they see a post they don't understand, and the rest of us can get on with it :rotfl:

I have to lie down now - I haven't used the word troll this much since the Infant 3 production of Three Billy Goats Gruff back in 1985.....
"Most of the people ... were unhappy... Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy." -- Douglas Adams

    Troll.
  • Hahaha I very nearly did a second post immediately afterwards, saying "Troll", with an explanation along the lines of getting it in before anyone else does

  • Yeah, I noticed one post today that I thought was really unfair, given that the user accused of being a troll had over 1,000 posts and loads of thanks. Seemed a bit of a bizarre accusation, really, plus their post was well thought out albeit in the wrong section.

What really irks me at the moment is people dismissing an experience one might've had simply because they choose not to believe it happened. What's that all about? Surely most posts on here are made up of peoples' experience so why do people think they have a right to say something cannot be true?

    Oooh ... I feel like having a rant ... sorry :(
  • most trolls are very new members usually having made very few post, same as the spammers really, they are an irritant but can soon be spotted
