Changing circumstances - I think I'm stuffed!

Hallo!

Can anyone offer any help? I'm currently an NHS student and i have a new baby (5 months). I get about £4000 per year in the form of a bursary.

my partner, up until now, has been self employed and earning around £10k. We get WTC and CTC . He has recently been offered a job which is salaried (about £20k) which obviously means we will lose the WTC. The job, however is 100 miles away so he's having to get a flat there but will be coming back at weekends and possibly in the week occasionally too. I can't currently move as I need to finish my degree.

I'm not sure what to do with regards to money etc. I don't want to be fraudulent but also want to make sure i'm not doing anything stupid and missing out on benefits. We're not breaking up but i basically will be living alone. I'm so confused and panicked that i'm going to bankrupt myself.

He works away - so do many - why is that fruadulent?

Or are you asking if you can claim as a single person?

You will still be a couple for benefits purposes.

If you have not split up, you are still regarded as a couple.
Working away during the week is quite common.
  • ok cool... good to know.

Yeah i basically am wondering what to do... you've answered me question. He'll just have to send me loads of money. Thanks guys.

Are you not eligible for student finance?

I guess you just have to do the sums - if you and your partner will be no better off if he takes the job, then don't take it. If you will actually be worse off, then definitely don't take it!

If there is a chance that you will be better off over a longer period of time, then you have to find a way to get yourselves through the bad times.

It would be nice if the new employers could pay a reduced salary, but cover your partner's expenses

He won't need a flat, he should look to get a Mon-Fri lodging. Much cheaper.

Or have a caravan like my husband and most of his co workers in the road building trade had, they used caravans while both working in a stationary location or they moved their caravans to the next lenght of road to be built.

Some times when my husband was in city/town jobs where the caravan was impraticle he asked local co workers where lodgeings where available and he normally got very cheap contrator rates in B&B's.
