Tax Credits and collage

Hi,just wondered how long tax credits take to update the award when a child is staying on in collage.
I told them in June my son is staying in education and expect the lower payment shown on my award notice to be paid next week but wondered if anyone who was in the same situation last year could give me a idea of how long it took after Sept 1st for the payments to increase again ?
Many thanks Simon

  • Hi Simon.

I know that you have said that you informed tax credits in June that your child was going to remain in education , but , Im just wondering do you realise that you need to call them up again TODAY to tell them again?

They may have taken the info off you in June but Im afraid that they cannot act on it so far in advance....

There is a discussion on this very site every year around this time and many people are caught out because they dont call the tax credit helpline again at the start of September to tell them (again) that there child is going back to education.

The agent you gave the info to in June should actually have informed you of this but as has been found many dont!

My Daughter left school and went onto "tech" a few years ago so I had to go through all this too.

My payments at the time were only reduced for 1 week though so not too bad.

What a pile of !!!!!!!! The update is run on the systems to pick up the education marker on the claim at the beginning of the month. You DON'T have to tell them again if you already have. If you don't know the answer don't just make it up!! Some people need the right advice, stop wasting their time!!!!!!

OP to answer the original question it takes anywhere up to about a week, hope that helps x

Thank you both for your answers.
I called tax credits to be on the safe side and they did indeed say it will be updated within the week :)

Do you get tax credits when your child goes to college? I got a letter in June to say I was overpaid £126 and my payments stopped that week, it also said I was not entitled to anything this year.I thought it was because we were just under the £26000 limit and could go over it this year. Am wondering if I should call them to say my child starts college on Monday.

No I didn't have a bad day, until I read your response which was giving someone totally wrong information.

Get it right and you won't get a response like that.

My word....if reading things on the internet (whether they happen to be right OR wrong) gets you in such a tizz then you really DO have a very sad life!

Seriously :rotfl:your response was way OTT :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

My new payments were on the system 3rd Sept.
    A very fast turnaround :j
  • When people are saying 'updated' and 'processed', does this mean that the money is paid straight away, or do you have to wait for the next payment date?

My last payment was on Monday (3rd Sept) and, although I'd told them my son would be in further education when I renewed in July, payments of CTC stopped and I only got my WTC element on Monday. I called on Tuesday & they told me it hadn't been processed yet, and I understand that it will be processed within about a week, but does that mean I will receive the CTC payment straight away that I was due on Monday, or will I have to wait 4 weeks for it to catch up?

Tax Credits Helpline were incredibly non-commital and wouldn't give a clear answer.

Thanks in advance for help. :)

It is hard to say for sure but if you call them tomorrow your new payments should be on the system. They told me all claims would update within a week.
