Switched my supplier in november 06 from BG to Atlantic, i gave an incorrect reading of 3 figures from my meter then, turns out it should be 4 digits, had an £8 bill in november, now 4 months down the line i have a bill for £450,500 units used, never had this usage before.

to clarify i use 1 room radiator for a few hours a night,a gas fire for 2 each night and twice a week heat for the bath for kids, thats it no gas cooker etc

not a heavy user as you see, talked to people around me and their bills are 3150 odd and they have heating in \all the rooms on constant.

Now i ask myself how on earth cna i get clobbered for this sum, asked Atlantic and they want me to log the next 5 days readings which il do.

I should add my bolier is quite old and havent serviced this for many many years, not sure how much of an impact this has.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me and propose any actions i need to take,i guess i need a service to start with and my summer hols have gone down the pan.

Appreciated

Atlantic have asked you to take 7 days worth of readings so they can send a read dispute through to Bgas. This takes 4-6 weeks to be resolved. There is nothing you can do but provide them with accurate readings so this can be done.

really appreciated your thoughts, still baffled how so many units been used,i dont have the gas on in every room all day or nite, few hours !!

    anyway wait and see
  • I am confused.

If you gave an incorrect reading of 3 figures, then a correct one of 4, then you will have to pay for the difference, surely?

Can't you ring both suppliers up and say you gave an incorrect closing/opening reading?

Then maybe they can estimate it a bit more accurately.

Or have I totally misunderstood? Sorry if I have!

Suppliers have a system in place for incorrect readings already but they need the upto date readings to put this through. Once submitted they normally take 4-6 weeks to be resolved - Longer if its it do with British Gas because of there recent computer system coming in.

There known as an Agree Read Dispute - All it basically means is the opening or final read is incorrect and both suppliers Agree on a start/final reading that they will both bill you from/to.

All about agreeing on readings really so that the customer doesn't get overcharged and its a fair reflection on usage with the old supplier.

Ah! That must be what Severn Trent did after our son disputed a bill which meant he would have had to have been filling his flat with water every day for six months. We never knew what they had done, just accepted the revised, realistic bill! Thanks for that!
