Flooring for baths/WC

Hi guys,

I'm buying a new-build and the purchase price didn't include any flooring. I'm planning to get the flooring done from a third-party as the builder charge me too much. However they have told me, for bathrooms/WC it is always recommended to use their own as it is better to install toilet after the tiling work is done. This way toilets/basins etc sits on top of the tiles and it's much better than getting tile cut and fill the edges. If that's right, i have to get builder to do the flooring for the baths/WC.

Is this true? Is it better to get flooring done before installing the baths/toilets?

cheers guys!

Tile floor first, install toilet, bath/shower, basin afterwards.

Work out all plumbing first by putting bath in place, loo in place and WHB in place. You need them there anyway to workout the tile layout . Layout your tiling takling account of window reveals and positioning of taps on bath WHB and centre of toilet, batten 3/4 (or so depending on how the layout works) tile height up from edge of bath. Do not have a full tile height and do not have a silly little ½" piece to cut. Batten other walls same way. Remove bath, WC and WHB and tile up from battens to a finish. Replace bath and secure, connect plumbing, tile down to rim of bath with bath. Tile floor into the untiled walls (there is no need to go right under bath). Install WC, WHB and bath panel. Tile down onto edge of floor tiles. Finish. Thats the pro sequence of events.

How much is your builder asking to tile what size floor area and what is the substrate to be tiled onto?

    Cheers

As somebody that does this for a living I can confirm it is better to have the wash hand basin and WC sat ON the tiles.

It gives a much neater finish and looks professional.

If you get a tiler in once you have moved in, they will normally know a plumber who will disconnect the WC and WHB and then reinstate them once the tiling is done.

  • We have around 25 sq meters and builders quote was around £1700. Is that too overpriced? The tiles go on concrete I reckon which is common for newbuild ground floor?

    Cheers!

Is he supplying the tiles in that price and if so what material and what size? Fancy Italian stuff or bog standard B&Q? Concrete will almost certainly need to be screeded first.

It has to be tiled 1st.

The only way you will know if the quote is over the top is to get others for similar materials, it's simple arithmatic to be honest, provided you can find several decent traders,;)
