I would like to adopt a rabbit!

I hope someone can advise me!

I found myself taking in an unwanted rabbit a short time ago and would like to get another to keep her company. I don't want a baby rabbit but one the same age as mine.

I live in east london and over the past month have contacted three animal rescues but no once has called me back. Two of them i have contacted twice via phone and email.

Is this usual? I know this sounds like a daft question but i don't understand why i haven't been contacted. All three charities have rabbits for rehoming on the website.

Can anyone recommed a charity in east london/essex who might be able to help. My poor bunny needs a friend!

Thank you

Did you make it super clear you want to adopt a rabbit or did you just leave your contact details? Maybe the rescues are overflowing and thought you wanted then to take yours on.

Yes, be sure to say you want to adopt a rabbit or they will probably ignore you (rescues are overcrowded at the moment).

Also, don't hesitate to give them some details about your current rabbit: is she vaccinated? Neutered? Where and how big are her living quarters? The more info you give, the more at ease they'll feel :)

Good luck finding a new friend for your rabbit. If she is female, I would have her spayed and paired up with a (neutered!) male rabbit. It is the best combination. You may also want to ask the rescue if they offer a "bonding service", ie if they will introduce the rabbits to each other for you. Rabbits can be very violent toward each other, and it is not always plain sailing to pair them up!
  • have you a local "pets at home " shop-ours always has rabbits/gerbils/hamstrs etc for adoption.

  • There is a rescue called fatfluffs I don't know if they extend to London but you could try

  • Fatfluffs are fab, but they are based about 100 miles outside London and they like to ensure that the bonding is going to be a success before they let you rehome a bun. My friend had a bunny from them and her original bun went on a "dirty weekend" at fatfluffs to find a companion

If possible, get any rescue to help with the bonding like this (as Ellie says), as bonding rabbits can be stressful (on rabbits and owner) and many rescues have valuable experience

Have you looked on the rabbit rehome website and forums? and RSPCA and Blue Cross branches locally?

    Good luck :)
