If you pull the card on your existing box you will see exactly what channels can be received without it.
In order to retain the PVR functions on a box without a subscription will cost you £10pm, not £5. It's been a tenner for as long as I can remember.

£120 per annum to record freeview channels?! This is profiteering - plain and simple. Have they NO LOYALTY to customers who have paid £000's in subscription?

No, greedy profiteering scumbags. I pay well over £600 per annum to watch TV plus the licence fee, I must be daft as most of Sky's programmes are repeats. Would be great if we had an alternative and please dont suggest freeview.

Why would Sky give a lifetime free service to ex-customers? They're running a business, no a social service.
They're not Freeview channels, they're Freesat From Sky channels; the fee allows you to decrpyt the data, new recordings or existing.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Work for Sky do we by any chance?

I'm not talking about a lifetime FREE service. Most customers will have paid for their boxes after 12 months - so Sky aren't 'giving' anything away.

And don't even start on the 'quality' of the programming of Sky Freeview channels!

Sky used to charge £10 on top of the subscription fee to use the record/play facility but scrapped it around the time the HD was introduced.I remember reading somewhere that the £10 'fee' isn't for the use of the record/play facility, but the right to use the licensed software that runs it.

No connection with Sky whatsoever...I'm not 'defending' Sky-I don't have to. But why do you expect them to give a service away when they can charge for it? It would be free for as long as the ex-subscriber has their Sky+ box.
If you want PVR faclities the all you have to do is bu a Freesat PVR and use Freesat instead of !!!!!!.
Sky don't have any Freeview channels, as already pointed out.
Spike is correct, the charge is technicaly for the decrpytion software, without which no new or existing recordings can be accessed.

My father has had Sky for 25+ years, he can just about afford it now he's retired (he watches the cricket). I guestimate he has paid in the region of £9000. I think he has more than paid for the box to have the full functionality.

Which is exactly what I recommend to Sky subscribers who can no longer afford the ever-increasing subscription costs.

The Sky box receives 'free-to-air' (freeview/freesat) channels and they add their own content along with a plethora of additional advertising. It costs them nothing extra to maintain this service.

Don't get me wrong, thetre are plenty of "hit-n-run" subscribers who sign for the minimum contract and then cancel JUST to get the box. But this is clearly not the same as above.

Well, my Mum has bee a BT customer for about 50 years and must have paid them thousands too. But should she cancel her subscription, I wouldn't expect her them to continue to allow her, say, free incoming calls as a 'thank you' for years of loyalty.
How exactly are Sky supposed to distinguish the 'hit and runs' from the 'loyal customers'?
If you end your sub, then you must expect all the services to be terminated.
Ever increasing Sky subs? They've been frozen for the last 2 years.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Ha, macman being accused of working for Sky - that's pretty hilarious if you read his posts!
All the OP's suggestions will work - he needs 1 feed into the bedroom, and the Sky box will give him Free To View channels. If he adds a freesatfromsky card for £25 he'll get some extra channels, called Free To Air (they're encrypted, the card decrypts them).
And recording would require both feeds, which I think we're clear on, as well as £10 per month to Sky. That's £120 in a year, and FreesatHD recorders (which will take the same 2 feeds) start at £160 new.

Didn't know Freesat could be picked up from the same direction as the Sky signal comes in! Will save up for a Freesat box but in the meantime I'm going to pick up some cables, connectors and a very cheap 2nd hand Sky box. Any advice on the best website for cables etc?
    In deep...
