Where to park in York?

Options
I'm hoping to get to York next month, usually go on the train but not well enough now so having to go by car.

Where's best to park for the 'old' part of York i.e. Stonegate/Minster. I can't walk far so want to try and park as close as possible (no blue badge).

Are there any on-road spots?
I've just looked at car parks but it works out at about £11 all day! (I've just got back from Cornwall where people were moaning about paying £3 all day)

Use the online system to book a space at York Railway station then take the road train from the Railway Museum to the Minster.

    Hi
Use one of the park and ride services

    http://www.york.gov.uk/parking/ride/

Free parking. £2.50 return for the bus, (2 under 16's free per paying adult).

Choose the service that stops nearest where you want to go.

I second the park and ride, a lot cheaper than paying for all day parking. I've used the park and ride a few times and its very convenient and the buses are regular and drop you in a central location. I've just got back from York today and was shocked at the car parking charges, me Daughter has a blue badge so this time we parked up and I heard a few people moan at the parking meter at the cost! My poor hubby was shocked to discover he had to pay 40p to go for a wee!!

Parking's extortionate in York, definately use the park and ride. I do if I'm working up there unless I've got to take a lot of stuff with me. Get a few weird looks dragging my toolbox on the bus but it saves money :D
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?
  • I'd love to use the park and ride, but sadly can't as I need access to the car to rest and take medication that I wouldn't be able to carry around with me. So the railway station is looking the best bet at the moment ...

I'm really shocked at how expensive parking is! I presume that's to encourage people to use the P&R and leave space for residents but it put me off initially.
  • I thought the parking charges were reasonable, as everything else is in York, but then I live near Cambridge, where they charge up to £25 per day for parking. Having said that, we still used the park and ride in York. Think the station is your best bet.
  • We normally park near Clifford's Tower - and yes, it's a ridiculous price, and the most complicated ticket machines known to man. A bit of a trek to the Minster from there. On-road spots are non-existant anywhere near the historic part of York - understandably.
