Can you cancel tax credits?

Hi everyone.
Does anyone know if you can opt out of tax credits.
My circumstances havent changed as such but after moving to cheaper accomodation and sorting out on going child maintenance from ex i am in a position to not need the extra help of tax credits .
I know child maintenance isnt taken into account and everyone I know says im mad as im entitled to the money but i dont want to claim just for the sake of it.
I keep getting stories of if you try to cancel that you will have to pay back loads of money!!
So just wanted to know if anyone had done it and is it a nightmare or not.

I cancelled mine over the phone in 5 minutes, no hassle at all.
