Nat West Mastercard extortion?

My oh paid her nat west mastercard in full in february, unfortunately, due to holiday it arrived with nat west 1 day late. She was charged £12 charges plus £18.49 interest, just for one day!! The following month was paid in full, nine days early and charged £4.27 interest. When she called the 0870 number, they told her that they charge for two months and tough basically. She has had this card twenty + years and never missed paying in full. A nice way to repay loyalty! Is this their normal practice. I wonder that you would get better terms off Don Corleone of mafia fame!

as far as the penalty is concerned your wife should phone up and explain it was a simple mistake, first time its ever happened etc and she may be able to get it removed.
as far as the interest is concerned i doubt you can do much. It is the universal approach of all credit card providers to charge the full interest from the day of purchase if you don't clear the complete debt by the due date.
in future its best always to pay the bills with a few days to spare or to pay by DD for the full sum.0 -
natwest don't do refunds unless there are really exceptional circumstances so i wouldn't bother phoning back. that 4.72 was not 'charged for a second month' it was charged until the full payment came in before the due date. you just have to learn from it and make sure it doesn't happen again i'm afraid.0
