My Cat's still weeing where she shouldn't! help!

Hiya,
My rescue housecat Holly is just over a year old, She was spayed last month and also tested for a urine infection, which came back clear, I have a Feliaway diffuser and she is still intent on peeing on our bed!

It's not everyday but it is becoming a nightmare. I think shes stopped and the next thing you know there it is again, i've gone through sooooo many duvets.

I have 2 housecats and 2 Litter trays which are changed every other day.

I don't know if its the litter I'm using, should I be changing it everyday? I know the house she came from she would have dirty litter for up to a week so I'm wondering now if I should change it everyday? Solid waste is removed daily.
I'm thinking I perhaps need to re-train her?
My 8 yr old cat has never pee'd anywhere other then her litter box so I'm really not sure how to re-train Holly.

Of course, I know I can shut them out, but A) the older one has always slept with me at night and B) Holly has already trashed the carpet by the door from me shutting her out.
I'm not prepared to give her away, So any helpful solutions or advice would be really gratefully recieved
Thanks

Huge amount of information for cat behaviour and inappropriate urination here

It is a VERY good website, the cat friendly home bit is fantastic. Recommendations for multi-cat households is a tray for each cat +1.

this is def a behaviour problem due to stress that may not be obvious but def needs investigating. if you dont want to go down the behaviourist route, the i would def recommend a book by vicky halls called the cat detective - very very good and informative read about various problems including inappropriate urination

If she was only spayed last month you may find this will settle down with time, there is an association between hormonal issues and inappropriate toileting. Why wasn't she neutered when younger, has she had health problems?

Cat urinating on the bed - the humans' nest, something that smells strongly of you - could indicate a behavioural or stress issue. When is she doing this? Have you tried keeping a diary of events preceding inappropriate toileting - changes in your routine, minor spats with the other cat etc?

Have you tried a different litter type, a clumping one or one with finer granules or with no artificial scent? Have you tried switching a covered tray for an open one or vice versa? Are there any guarding or dominance issues with the other cat?

ETA: notice from your other threads you have a large dog and that your eight year old cat was not spayed up to a month ago. IMO this is likely the problem, two unspayed females AND a large dog all cooped up in a small space. :( It's likely your entire bed stinks of hormonal cats, it might be worth deep cleaning the mattress with a powerful enzyme product followed by a wet shampooing machine and chucking out all your bedding once both cats are spayed.

  • also if you are cleaning up the urination with bleach ... this sometimes smells like cats urine, so re urinate over it
use a biological washing powder to clean up the urine

Sounds like a behaviour issue and this cat is VERY unhappy with her life and what you are able to offer her :(

Please dont use bleach, dont use any type of liquid that turns grey/ misty when diluted with water (bleaqch/ savalon etc) this is very dangerous and poisinous to cats.

I havent see your previous posts but i would say you have one very unhappy lady :(
    Ant.

Hi there, I'm not really sure where it says they're cooped in a small space?? We live in a regular 2 bedroom house with a garden? many people with pets live in flats and manage ok and the dog is not allowed upstairs at all, I have gone through at least 6 brand new duvets since about May time, Like I said it's not all the time, I think she's stopped and then she starts again!

She wasn't spayed before because I took her in through a friend of a friend after someone else wasn't looking after her properly and leaving her on her own for hours at a time and with stinking dirty tray for weeks at a time.

I have absolutely no intention of giving her up or cleaning anything with bleach, I have had house cats before but not one thats done this.

Blimey, That is a completely unfounded comment, how do you know what I can offer her? Of course I could have left her with her prev owner who couldn't be bothered with her at all, left her with dirty litter and barely any food and on her own for weeks at a time with no affection though couldn't I?
She's an incredibly affectionate cat and we snuggle up all the time , she has cuddles, play, toys, cat posts, treats, water fountain, food, clean litter trays etc. But yeah if you think the life I offer her is bad then crack on.....:rotfl::rotfl:

I have tried, wood Pellets, Clumping, Ultra absorbant from Tesco, Regular cat little , currently using Paper pellets, Both trays are covered although I noticed this morning when I tookk the lid off to scoop waste matter out, she jumped straight in to defecate without the lid on so I might leave the lid off and see, the other cat is loving and as placid and no problem at all with dominance

That is a small space for three unspayed animals IMO; don't understand the garden reference, you said they are housecats. Great to hear uncovering the tray may make a difference. Are you cleaning the trays with an enzyme based product?

I think maybe I'm mis-understanding you, the only one that is unspayed at the moment is Our dog (due to medical reasons)and the Garden reference meant that the dog has the outside as well as downstairs and the cats have all the house so thus no being cooped up together?? I knew what I meant :rotfl:
Although to be completely fair we used to live in a 2 bed flat and had no problems at all with prev cats

The Cats are now both spayed as I booked in the older one in just after my post as i spoke to the Vet after Holly's Spaying

The other thing I was wondering is one of the trays (the one holly came with actually) is deeply scratched at the bottom in one place and I'm wondering if theres some 'smell' ground in, i have scubbed and scrubbed at it but it still seems a little stained to me, I use a litter spray from pets at home but I can't find it on their website ? i'm thinking I might go and get another tray and put it in our bedroom, I know its not ideal but I'd rather that the the duvet? Thats the onyl thing i can think of now

Our second tray is an underbed storage box, under a fiver from Home Bargains and the like. :money: It is not half as bad as I imagined having a tray in the bedroom, it's not like I spend that much time in there whilst awake!
