    After reading some reviews the pros and cons seem to be as follows;

Pros - Handy size (ie easy to carry around), accurate, full postcode entry, easy to use
cons - Maps may not be up to date (but can you download updated ones?), screen a bit small for easy viewing, poor reception in some cars (would an additional aerial remedy this), Does not have rechargeable batteries, unit resets when car turned off (ie journey details need to be reentered)

questions - Is there a way of getting warnings of speed cameras on it? Does the machine always reset itself when the engine is turned off even if you have batteries in it? How bad is the reception? Can you update the software / maps?

Summary seems a good unit for the price and I am very tempted at long last to dip into the Sat Nav era, but are there better deals out there? Why can't I be more decisive?

I ordered one last weekend. Arrived on Wednesday, and I am impressed with the unit. The speed at it recalculates is excellent. Downloaded over 13,000 POI.
Accept that the screen is a little on the small side, but it does what it says on the box. 12 month guarantee included.

Part of the Furniture 100 Posts Combo Breaker
John Lewis have this model of Sat Nav, seems to detect cameras, reduced from £199 to £129, further £10 with discount code
Roadangel Navigator 6000 GPS/Safety Alert System
Pros's seem to be good at pointing out cameras
Con's not a great Sat Nav for directions....

This has the very latest mapping .
but like all satnav if you want the new maps each year you have to pay .
Speed cams and other point of interest and various tweaks can be added from https://www.pocketgpsworld.com (speed cams £2 per month or £19 per year

I have not noticed that it resets after tuning off on my Sons unit.
You can use rechargable NiMh batteries from Lidl (£1.99 for four, the i3 takes two )in it but they are not recharged while in the unit

The reception is on a par with all units that do not have Sirf III chipsets ..an external aerial is available from Maplin for £9.99.

Lots of places have been selling the Garmin i3 for £99.99 during the last year !

I3s owners who registered with Garmin since October 2006 are entitled to receive a free v9 map update DVD. Not sure if this offer applies to refurbished units though - depends upon whether they've previously been registered I guess ? If you have an i3 with the removable transflash card, then you can put the whole of Western Europe (minus a couple of extremities) onto a cheap 1GB micro-SD transflash card ! Bargain or what ?

Note these units *are* already v9 maps !

I3 is an excellent unit for the price. Size is not a disadvantage - this is more of an advantage. It it the quality and loudness of the 'voice' that is more important than watching the screen, and this the 'voice' is OK.

I run my i3 from 2xAAs 2300mAH NiMHs, as this involves no cumbersome wires around the car. Goes for about 4-5 hours on two AA batteries. Easy to change batteries on the move. Garmin i3 shouldn't lose it's setup when you take out the batteries either - but you will temporarily loose your 'lock' with the satellites. Can take the i3 a few minuntes to relocate, as per normal SIRFII chipset devices.

    YMMV
