Can i claim back mortgage protection insurance?

Hello, i have joined in the hope that someone will be able to offer some advice re claiming mortgage payment protection insurance.

I took out a mortgage in 2005 to buy my first house and the mortgage was arranged by the mortgage adviser at the estate agents. She told me that in order to be given a mortgage i would need to take out building and contents insurance and also mortgage protection. She arranged both. I paid the mortgage protection for the 2 years that i had that mortgage.

I then renewed my mortgage and was told that it is not compulsary to take out protection.

I want to ask if it is possible to claim back mortgage payment protection and if so how do i do that?

Thank you for your help.

You havent indicated any reason for mis-sale.

Estate agent advisers and a number of mortgage advisers require you to purchase the insurance via them to allow you to get the "free" mortgage advice. They make their money on the insurance. That is allowed.

Did you have any other reason for complaint?

  • Hello,
Thanks for your reply. I didn't realise that it was the case that the mortgage adviser was giving free advice aslong as wetook out the insurance cover. She said that her fee was paid by Halifax for arranging the mortgage with them. The insurance was with Zurich.

Until you explained that i thought that one reason i was mis-sold the insurance because i was told it was compulsary and it wasn't.

The mortgage adviser only covered me with the policy for unemployment and disability because i was on a temporary contract at the time but my partner was in a permanent position. This is the second reason i thought the insurance was mis-sold as looking on the internet it looks like i would not have been covered on a temporary contract.

Is any of this correct or does this apply to ppi rather than mortgage protection?

    Thanks
