At the end of the day it needs to be cheaper (or close to it) than any other way of acquiring a new car so you need to do your sums carefully.

The only cars that tend to be cheap are either unpopular cars or a new model is due. Don't expect a deal on BMW or a popular Ford for example. The days of great deals are long gone but if you dig deep you might unearth a gem.

Mileage needs to be kept lowish ie around 10,000 miles to get the numbers to work.

The one time I would ease my cost would be for elderly parents as it is a fairly hassle free way of keeping them on the road in new warranted cars that magically disappear at the end of the lease.

Many will tell you you never own it, but in my view that is no bad thing with a depreciating asset.

So get that excel spreadsheet up and running and crunch the numbers.

Compare the figures to a 1 to 3 year old car that is still covered by the manufacturers warranty.

A 3 year old car should be as reliable as new car but close to half the price of a new car.

Or do you only want the latest reg at the best price?
