You will be charged around £80 to check the meter but it will be refunded if found inaccurate.

There are lots of things to do before getting the meter checked. You will struggle to get your supplier to act without providing them with some credible evidence.

Take daily meter reads, maybe twice or more daily and write them down. May show up a pattern.
Switch off / unplug everything and see if the meter is still incrementing
With everything off use a known high load item, electric fire etc, and leave it on for 15 minutes and check the meter. A 1kW fire should have used .25 units in that time.
Switch off at the main fuseboard and see if the meter is still incrementing.
Look in your attic / meterbox, are next door growing cannabis with your electric.
Get yourself an energy meter to help check your consumption.

I've just changed to EDF Blue from Scottish hydro standard. I wasn't entirely sure about usage (gas units vs cubic meter etc) but guestimated. Plus I looked at the cost of a single unit and the standing charge per day and will be saving about 10% on both my current bills.

I always payed by fixed direct debit but with Hydro I could adjust it as needed, so pay more or less depending on season, guess that will be the same with EDF.

You can pay EDF any amount over and above the agreed monthly direct debit any time you want.

You will not be able to pay less, unless you can convince EDF that you would be overpaying if you continue with the monthly payments agreed. If you've used accurate information in the first place, EDF will set your monthly payments to 1/12 of your annual cost, so no need to modify payments :)

:) thanks for the advice about the meter.

(I doubt our next door neighbour is up to anything though :) )

Countless other threads show postings from people who would disagree with that. It is still one of life's great mysteries how EDF come up with the direct debit amount.

IMO no great mystery. The principle reason is using a high, undisclosed and unsubstantiated projected consumption. A secondary reason is lack of clarity regarding the date of the 'annual review'.

Not helped by posters who complain not following up.

I was going to switch to EDF Blue but they have already pulled the deal, it's still there but now it's gone up by about £50 for me.

Pulled from comparison sites, but still available on EDF's own site
