MP3 player with removable/replaceable battery?

My 8GB Sony Walkman, my loyal and constant companion, has finally given up the ghost. I've had the back off a previous Sony Walkman to dry it out and it looked quite difficult to work on, so any repair to this one will have to be performed by an authorised service centre, what should I expect to pay?

Any ideas on whether to replace or repair, 8GB was enough for me at the time, though 16 GB would be an improvement, and are there any MP3 players of a decent quality/capacity which allow easy replacement of a battery or use of alkaline batteries?

Mp3 players with replaceable batteries don't really exist apart from a few cheap Chinese players.

separate mp3 players themselves are not common nowadays as most people use phones.

I too was looking to replace my mp3 player, but i've decided due to modern technology to buy a phone with mp3 playback and a memory card.
looking at the specs of the phone and what i actually want I'm getting the G300 mobile phone, mp3 player, mediaplayer avi format, 5mp camera, and then of course you get radio, the phone itself, memory cards are cheap, if the memory card dies get another one, dont have to worry about battery, due to the fact they are designed to be recharge many time over the course. time you work out how much each individual item would cost, you'd spend more than on the phone that comes with it all, and you'd need plenty of pockets, oh and then theres the apps you can download / games.

Sadly true, but my trusty Creative Zen Nano plus is still going strong after 6 years. 16 hours from an AAA battery.

Rubbish! For example, that Apple company is still selling variants of the overpriced iPod. Just search for MP3 players in Amazon.

To the OP, just cut to the chase and buy the best VFM product on the market the Sansa clip + Better sound quality than the iPod and you don't have to use iTunes.

The devil may have all the best tunes, but it is hell navigating iTunes to get to them!:)

Since when did you need to use iTunes with an iPod?

An iPod sounds quite as good as any other player out there, all modern players should sound the same, Apple, Sansa, Cowon, Sony etc. and with the Touch you can just download the music player of your choice. Of course, it depends what iems you use - you certainly won't be noticing sound quality (good or not) with cheap cx300s. My current favourites are EX1000s - worth every penny.

I think a fair few iPod owners might be inclined to disagree with that.

I own 2 iPods and a Sony myself, and there are definitely far fewer mp3 players around compared with 2008, which was perhaps their height of popularity. Argos, John Lewis offer perhaps half the range they once did.

And it's understandable given the ubiquity of modern phones which offer the same mp3 player features and sound quality but also a whole lot more like the g300 mentioned.

  • Looking at the Sony website it appears if I send it to them they'll just send me a replacement unit, so all of my MP3s will be lost. I do have backups, but being [STRIKE]a bit[/STRIKE] totally disorganised it'll be weeks before I find them all and reload them on to a replacement. I'm not confident it is the battery that's failed because of the way it stopped working so suddenly, so I might ask my local mobile phone repair guy to check it out before I bin it, or take my mini screwdriver set to it.

I'm tempted by a NWZ-S765 16GB Walkman in my local Argos for £76 but still a bit annoyed at my old Walkman not giving me any notice it was going to expire, so the Sansa Clip+ may well test my brand loyalty, thanks DaveC. I've looked at anythingbutipod.com and other sites since for a few ideas and it looks like I'm not the only person to be irritated by the lack of mp3 players with replaceable batteries.

I'd go with the first statement but not the second.

Argos certainly sell quite a few.

Yes, but perhaps half as many, or less, as they used to.

If you go to a site like anythingbutipod (where many have ipods) you'll find that it is quiet, with very little activity compared with years past.

Yes but you suggested they weren't common, (see above, taken from you post) not that there wasn't so much choice. Argos have plenty to choose from as do PC World, so the OP should not have any problem replacing his/her dead MP3 player, it's just unlikely that the OP will get one that isn't rechargeable, though why the OP wants one with a separate battery I'm not sure.
