The usual advice is to open the bathroom window but keep the bathroom door shut or there is the risk of moisture accumulation in the adjacent areas of the property.

OP - if you really want to limit the window opening sessions then you may want to consider buying/running a dehumidifier once showering/bathing is done.

Make sure that you notify the issue of the paintwork etc to the LL *in writing*, keeping a copy.

    That genuinely isn't my experience.:)

We're having exactly the same problem with our rental.

We only have an over the bath shower though, no separate cubicle.

The paint was flaking slightly when we moved in but has got worse over time. We constantly have to wash the beginnings of mould off the ceiling.

The window is wide open during a shower (and pretty much all day) but the blind has to be down otherwise people would see in from the street. I'm sure having the blind down cuts down some of the air coming in/leaving but there's not much I can do about that.

It wont be practical to have the window as wide open in the depths of winter.

The house isn't well insulated and it's an old building so any warm moist air that hits the outside walls or ceiling immediately causes problems. The room badly needs an extractor fan.

We do have a humidifier but our fuel bills here are astronomical so I'm not happy about running it every day.

The shower is used 4 (sometimes 5 times a day) so it's not surprising there are moisture issues. It's a large family house though so the amount of times the shower is on is not unreasonable for the situation.

LL will be visiting shortly so I'm going to discuss the situation with him.

I'm not willing to repaint the ceiling myself as it's more than just a lick of paint that's required.

  • We're in a similar situation and don't really like leaving the window open when we both go out to work all day, but have found that wiping down the bath/shower area afterwards really helps - so doesn't so much seem to be a steam problem as sitting water?
