What car would you buy?

Hi all

I am curious as to what car you would consider good value / a good buy for the following situation.

Hubby has a new job that will (for at least the first 3 months) mean him travelling about 600 miles per week. We have up to £6k to spend (so obviously not buying new) and he currently drives a Peugeot 306 which we will trade in as it has 115k miles on the clock and won't pass MOT in January due to numerous electrical faults - and we'd never touch a Peugeot again for this reason. As he will be travelling alot on M25 he would like and automatic and thinks a diesel will be more economical.

Given the above, what you you buy and why?

Going for an automatic diesel (with some exceptions) usually means a big effect on the economy of the car. A manual is usually more efficient.

£6000 will buy lots of nice things..

Mondeo - late MK3 with all the bells and whistles or an early Mk4.

Passats - but they are boring.
    Octavia 2.0TDi L&K
    Honda Accord 2.2
    Volvo S60 D5

Manual diesels are better fuel wise than an auto diesel. But spending a lot of time on the M25 - urgh! I'd pick auto just for that reason alone lol.

One other car I just thought about - how about a late (2003) Pug 406? 2.2HDi Exec. Just b'cos you have £6000 to spend doesnt mean spend it all. Pick these up for less than half your budget and then spend the rest on holiday lol.

Spend £3k on a late model MK3 mondeo and go on a world cruise with the rest.

A basic ocatavia DSG or upto elegance will give cruise and dual climate,

    L&K are a bit pricy

There is however a high miler 09 going on the skoda owners site for that money which is almoast an L&K spec.

if only a few months high mileage what will it drop to, might be worth spending less and putting the money into fuel for 3 months.

look longer term unless the plan is to change again .

SEAT Leons are fantastic cars, very similar build to the Golfs but IMO look a little nicer and are quite a bit cheaper. I've just bought a mk2 Audi TT but my next car will almost certainly be another Leon.

Definitely go for a diesel too, not sure on automatic, it won't be as economic but if you don't mind taking the hit then go for it.

After owning a late MK3 and now having an 09 MK4, I'd go with the MK3. The MK4 is definitely built down to a price and it shows in the quality of the trim and in how things are bolted to the car. It just feels cheaper. Things that were solid on the MK3 are flimsy and bend when you press them.
