Claiming housing benefit in shared flat without tenancy agreement

How does it work when applying if the room is not taken through a letting agent but spareroom.co.uk? There's no official agreement then. Will it lead to a rejected claim, or is a letter from others in the house enough?

Cheers

Have you proof of the advert? Screen shot from spare room? Also evidence of the money leaving your account and going into theirs.

Yep. That's good then if that is all that is needed.

Surely you have a tenancy agreement?

If not sounds like a cowboy agent/website.

To save yourself time and a possible delay in receiving HB why don't you telephone the relevant department and ask what evidence/proof you need of your tenancy.

That way you can at least prepare yourself and get in contact with the LL if necessary.

Many people these days get rooms through sites such as spareroom or gumtree and not a letting agent. Letting Agents are expensive and many don't do flat shares, only entire properties. So when getting a room asking for a tenancy agreement is worth doing but how much legal standing does it have?

A tenancy agreement is not with the letting agent it is with the landlord. The LA is the LL's agent.

So, do you have a room in a shared house with other people or do you share with the landlord (may make a differnce as to what kind of contract you have, albeit not a written one at the moment.)
