Replacing a socket query?

I have a 10mm supply which used to connect the old cooker.

Am I OK to replace old MK socket/switch with 13a socket for a plug in cooker.

What rating fuse should I put in instead of exisiting 30a?

Yes you should have no problem with fitting the socket from a regs point of view. However on a practical note you may have trouble getting the cables into the back of a cheap socket. The MK Logic sockets should be OK though.

The fuse or MCB is usually put in there to protect the cable, not the appliance that you're plugging into it. The fuse rating must be below what the cable can cope with. If you,re sure you have a 10amp cable then the existing 30a fuse should be fine with this. However it would be more likely, but not a certainty, to be a 6mm cable. In either case the 30amp should be fine.

If you later decide to run a radial from this socket to incorporate more sockets, that is to say you wire one or more sockets in parallel, then you must use a minimum of 4mm t and e cable, or use min 2.5 t and e and change the fuse to a 20 amp.

Having just had to shell out loads of dosh for cable, I can tell you that there is no economic sense in using cable that is bigger than you need for a given job.

Running in parallel - isn't that a spur?

Would It be ok to make two spurs off this connection?

Or are you suggesting a mini ring main? I.E. A feed & return to the socket connected to the 6/10mm.

Yes you can run 2 spurs off the formentioned circuit , it would be known in the trade as a radial circuit (not a spur). A spur is when you tap off of a ringmain, if you where to do that, then you are not allowed to take 2 spurs from the same point without fusing the spur down first.

I may be mistaken but I thought the OP could be about to run both socket nos. 2 and 3 each straight from socket no. 1. What he should do IMO is to run socket no.2 from no.1 and socket no.3 from no.2.

And use 4mm to do this or use 2.5 and change the fuse to a 20 amp rating.

I absolutely agree, maybe the OP should be a little more descriptive of how he was going to do this. As the method i mentioned relies heavily on your comment which i quoted above.
  • You have several options, bearing in mind the job is notifiable under part P.

1 Leave it as it is
    2. Change the over current protection to 20A and make it a 20A radial circuit.
    3. Rip it out and extend the ring main.
    4. Change the original socket to a double socket, this will give you scope for changing things back if you wish (of if the wife tells you she wants an electric cooker now :D )

You should use a competent person for the work, links below

    Ok.
    Ideally, my plan is this.

Chop out wall above 6mm (I checked:)) Cooker socket and place unswitched socket 12 " from ceiling to feed cooker hood and New Combi boiler. Then to extend downwards into a socket for the washing machine & dishwasher and to then extend once more to a single socket for the gas hob ignition power.

All of this, I understand, needs to be in 4mm and the fuse in the box changed to a 20A rating.

That then is called a Radial Circuit?

Yes that is a radial circuit.
