If you're on a standard tariff, you'll almost certainly save money if you switch to either another tariff with BG or another supplier.
Going with fixed or variable tariffs is a personal choice and a bit of a gamble as you initially pay more but usually by the end of the tariff are paying less than most other variable tariffs.
Search this forum for threads on First Utility if you want people's opinions on them. If you're happy with BG and would be more comfortable staying with them, just look on the comparison sites to see which of their tariffs is best for your usage (enter your annual kWh usage to get more realistic figures).

There's a number around, but I generally use Uswitch to get an idea what the current tariffs are like. If you are going to switch, find one and then see if cashback sites like Quidco are offering any deals for switching.
Once you've got an idea what you might have to pay, talk to BG, tell them you're looking at switching and see what deal they can offer you to stay. Probably won't be as good, but might help you make up your mind.

Don't assume any supplier will put their customers onto the cheapest tariff they have - it's bad for business!
The EDF Blue +Price deal is proving to be very attractive at the moment. Again, search this forum for threads about EDF, particularly their automatic recalculation of direct debit amounts. But if you are normally on top of the game and can track your own usage - and what it should be costing you, you should be able to deal with EDF. I do, despite them!
Nothing to lose by going for that deal, it has no penalty for leaving early if you find a better deal or EDF drive you crazy. :)

The default tariff with any supplier is always Standard tariff-which is always the most expensive.

I've bitten the bullet and moved to EDF. My father in law has been with them several years and not had any problems. As already said by Victor as long as you manage it and keep on top of your account then I can't see why you won't be fine :D
    According to ABBA apparently it's a rich mans' world . . .:p
