help needed - to buy or not

I have a 56 plate peugeot 307 SW. I bought it four years ago but now it has some major issues, i have been told it needs a tyreand rear disc's so that it can pass its MOT. After this it needs some work on its injectors and air dosser as it has some oil leaks which could cause problems in the future. Told around £600 - £700 to repair and this may not solve the problem, the car is only worth £2800 px.

My dilemma .... do i buy a practical car (two children aged 10 and 11) or do i buy a BMW that i have always wanted.

im not sure which car to go for any advice please, i have seen a nice BMW 320ci M sport, but will this be too costly in the long rung ie petrol and tax and will i get a huge repair bill on that.

Well - ignore the fact it needs a tyre and rear discs for the MOT these are wear and tear items and really, with kids in the car, it is worth keeping a track of them yourself, purely from a safety point of view. Any car you buy will need these so if you do swap them, make sure the rest aren't borderline too.

The issue is the leaky injectors. That's a cost you need to look at. If the car runs fine now and will continue to be fine then you could look at trading it in should you want to. It might be the car has been very reliable for the last four years and you think it is worth fixing (although this could be the start of a series of problems, it depends on how well you feel the car has been maintained and has treated you).

Re the beemer, if it is a target for your saving then no harm in it. Not the biggest car in terms of space though and a tad bit overhyped I think. You may well get a huge repair bill but again, that can happen with lots of cars.

Is it the right car for what you use it for? would you be better off with the estate and a diesel for high miles and (with a few BMWs) fairly low tax?

    Heart v head I think!

With regards servecing the 307 was serviced last year as it only has 48k on the clock. We have another car an x type diesel which we use for family holidays as it has a tow bar, the 307 is just for work and back, howerver i do go fishing so have a lot of things to put into the car.

Will have to finance a bit for the BMW , so trying to do figures with montly payments , petrol and tax versus the 307 which is paid for.

I would get the tyre and discs and then sell privately, with 12 month MOT, and use money for new car.

Sounds like you have already talked yourself out of the BMW so get a practical diesel estate.

Will the car sell privately, what if someone looks under the bonnet and sees the oil, it will put off any potential buyers?

    What car would people recommend?

If you do lots of miles and like the 3-series, then 320d SE.
