I want to switch fron SSE

Hi I'm not sure what to do. I am with Southern electric and want to switch because of the price hike. I did my meter readings yesterday and realise i own £100 on electric. I can't afford to pay this off in one go if i switch. what can i do?

An arrears of £100 won't block a switch, but you''ll have to pay it off when you get the final bill.

It's not arrears unless 28 days have passed since it was formally demanded from you.

It sounds like all you've done is try to calculate what you would owe if the account was to be closed today.

It will take 4-6 weeks from application for a switch to go ahead. So plenty of time to save up the £100 plus whatever other electricity you consume in the meantime because, as macman says, you will be billed for the full outstanding amount following the switch.
  • Just remember that its odds on that the other big 5 will all follow suit in the coming weeks or months, they usually do, and you could tie yourself in with one of them beforehand and be stuck with their price hike....

I think the OP meant they can't afford to pay it as a final bill.

Speak to your supplier about a payment arrangement. If its short, they will monitor it and pass to a DCA if you don't pay it off.

Whilst a switch now takes 21 days after the end of the cooling off period (4-6 weeks was the old average prior to a specific target being introduced), your switch date is the final bill and this will be earlier than the end of the 21 days, provided they stick to the expected target.
