I managed to tether a laptop to my mobile on '3' and they never even found-out.
I had (in fact, still have somewhere) a mobile that runs Symbian. I purchased 'Joikuspot' (but not the one designed for '3' as this links to '3's server). By changing the DNS settings away from those of '3', I was able to surf the net without anything registering on my usage allowance.

Three can, I got a web page telling me tethering wasn't included in my plan.

    Interesting.

I occasionally use the wi-fi hotspot facility on my htc phone (and connect my iPad). Not had anything as yet.

I think my data allowance is 1gb with three. Certainly I don't exceed the limit, so maybe they don't mind.

Hold on...are you actually suggesting that the way 3 tracks traffic volume means that they don't detect any traffic at all if you use e.g. OpenDNS?

I use an app called Set DNS on my Android so that I use OpenDNS, but my carrier (T-Mobile) certainly registers all my traffic. I haven't tried tethering yet, though.

At first I thought they were taking a while to register my data usage, but no, they simply failed to pick up the data as it went via openDNS.

Very interesting. Perhaps I should switch from T-Mobile...

So how does that work , do you connect to openDNS for your phone calls , text messages, and IP traffic please enlighten us

We're talking IP traffic (data) here, so no -- not calls or texts. How?

  • It seems a bit unlikely that open DNS prevents 3 from registering the data traffic.

A "vanilla" version of Joikuspot may well make the tethered data indistinguishable from normal phone data (other than the user agent) but it is rather odd that the data wasn't seen at all.

It sounds like 3 had/have a system like the iPhone where tether data uses a different apn.

I've used Bluetooth tethering on 3 to an old Sony Phone for some years but never had any comment from 3. Having said that I'm not on an uncapped data plan.

Yes ha ha that is for name resolution only not passing your data on your sodding mobile phone
