EDF !!!!!Help

Hi all really need a bit of help with this one. Since hubby and i moved into our property we DO NOT use gas,we do have a meter though. We are ALL electric. We received a PREPAYMENT GAS STATEMENT yesterday with charges of £4283.22 vat £214.16:eek:, it says USAGE for Last 12 months 44,771kwh and the next 12 months will be 46,182khw.How on earth can they charge us usage when there was no usage. I phoned EDF and they said theres a standing charge added too i said what do you mean a standing charge she said its a charge for having a gas meter(i didnt know they charge people to have meters) and that i was advised to have the meter taken out in 2008(apparently everyone knows theres a charge, maybe if you use gas!!),i told her i was not advised of any standing charge but was advised to take the meter out, according to her them advising me to take the meter out is advising me of the charge!!!! any advise will be very much appreciated

Its an annual statement not a bill, you are pre payment so it should not be possible to run up a bill outside of emergency credit.

Check your reading on your meter against the readings on the statement and see if they match also look to see if the readings entered on the statement are estimated or actual readings.

All suppliers levy a standing charge whether you use gas or not, it's for the supply and maintenance of the network and metering. If you don't use gas and don't want to pay it, then why don't you switch to an NSC tariff?
The statement is presumably based on estimated readings, give the actual readings and ask them to rebill you.
It sounds as though you have not submitted meter readings for a long time, it's best to do this every 3 months at least.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thank you bark01 this is the first gas statement weve had why now n not previous years? its just strange.
Thank you macman ill check out nsc tariffs, looked at the statement and they are estimates.ill give them another call in a while, Thank you both again;-)

Check your opening readings, did you give them?

Does the bill match the meter reading?

Can you post some detail on the readings as its unclear at the moment.

If you consume no gas and its a PPM anyway, there is a problem with the billing and if they have used an estimate, its very wrong as they can see there are no payments hence should have made contact.

It sounds to me like a back billing error.

As mentioned already, if you have not consumed any gas but are being charged for consumption, then this will be based on an estimated reading (or perhaps an incorrect reading).
When you provide the supplier a true, accurate meter reading, then you will only be charged for what you have consumed.

As regards a standing charge, unfortunately ignorance is no defence. The costs are clearly quoted on their website (currently 22p per day excl. vat) - so about £80 + VAT per year.

    And it also states:
Daily Standing Charges (where shown) are payable
whether or not any gas and/or electricity is consumed
    at your premises.

If you want to keep the meter and not pay anything, then you will have to change to a supplier that does not apply a standing charge for a PPM gas meter.
