I have posted these bits on various threads but not all in one place

Number of entries (guesswork but more likely hundreds of thousands upwards rather than tens of thousands)
During a four year period from 2003 to 2007 GMTV received 62 million competition entries, that's equal to 15.5 million a year, almost 300,000 a week or over 42,500 a day

If ITV just aim to break even on the phone-in competitions then the big ones would need over 100,000 paid for entries alone and then there are all the free entries which will probably be many times whatever the paid number is.

ITV's interactive revenues, primarily raised from competitions and phone voting around ITV1 programmes, were £30 million in 2009 (2008: £34 million). There were almost 100 million viewer interactions, entries to competitions and votes across the year. The X Factor final alone generated over 10 million votes, up 28% year-on-year.

Winner selection (Totally random regardless of entry method)
ITV operates an independently developed winner selector tool under licence from a third party.
This is known as 'Winner Selector’ and is a market leading solution used for managing many
competitions across the UK. The Winner Selector works by taking in all entries to a competition
from each entry route, and assigning a unique random number to every entry. This is done
independently of the original entry method, and assures that each entry has the same chance of
being selected, irrespective of the method of entry.

Contacting winners UPDATED see post #9

[STRIKE]

For standard competitions they will make reasonable efforts to contact the
winners. They used to state the number of calls they would make each day, the
calling pattern, how many days they would keep calling for etc and it was over a
month before they would stop calling. Do not expect them to e-mail anymore as
that would give an advantage to a particular entry route

It is only time critical competitions where they move on quickly if they
cannot make contact without delay.
[/STRIKE]

[STRIKE]
The winner will be contacted as soon as practicable
on or after the draw date as indicated in the interaction information.
Reasonable efforts will be made to contact a winner
on the phone number provided when entering the competition or such other method
of contact deemed appropriate by the Promoter in its sole discretion in the
circumstances. Where the prize is time critical and a winner needs to be
found before the time to take up the prize passes, the announcement on air or
the interaction information will indicate the date when the winner will be
contacted and the Promoter will contact such winner on the phone number (or
other method of contact (if appropriate)) they provided, calling three times
in a two-hour daytime period or as indicated in the interaction information.
If the winner cannot be contacted or successful contact is not made within the
fixed time period as specified or if they fail to provide an address for
delivery of the prize or fail to meet any of the eligibility requirements or are
otherwise unable to comply with the interaction terms and conditions, this may
result in forfeiture of the prize and the Promoter reserves the right to
disqualify that entrant (without further liability to that entrant) and offer
the prize to the next eligible entrant and thereafter until a winner is
found
[/STRIKE]

( favorito was told they try for 28 days at different times)

"Seem to be lots of Real Deal winners compared to This Morning etc."

That's certainly because there are usually at least 5 and up to 26 or so Real Deal competitions for every one of the others, I also think the larger prizes attract more entries through Text/Phone (I know people who pay to enter ((they have been told!)) who only do so when it is a large cash prize/car etc, they don't do the smaller ones) while £2,000 or £20,000 probably doesn't make much difference to the number entering through the internet as they will be entering them all anyway.

(Real Deal generally has 5 or 6 comps a week when it is on air while the others have one a week, often one a fortnight or even one a month.)

Question for the winners: I know it really shouldn't matter when you enter the competition as long as its before the end date, but I'm curious as to whether there's been more winners from those who entered at the very end of the compeition, or the beginning?

    It makes no difference.

That's only if the prize is time critical.
    2008: £783.12 - 2009: £6,401.15 - 2010: £4,230.61 - 2011: £8720 - 2012: £2,041.89

ITV updated their contact procedures a few weeks ago
    5. Winner Contact
5.1.General contact: The winner will be contacted as soon as practicable on or after the draw date or judging date (as appropriate) as indicated in the interaction information. Reasonable efforts will be made to contact a winner on the phone number provided when entering the promotion or such other method of contact deemed appropriate by the Promoter in its sole discretion in the circumstances. Unless the prize is time critical or time sensitive, the Promoter will try to contact the winner over a 4 week period.

5.2.Time critical: Where the prize must be taken up within 3 months of the close date of the competition, the competition will be considered “time critical”. As a winner needs to be found before the time to take up the prize passes, the interaction information will indicate the date when the winner will be contacted and the Promoter will contact such winner on the phone number (or other method of contact (if appropriate)) they provided, calling three times in a three-hour daytime period or as indicated in the interaction information.

5.3.Time sensitive: Where the prize must be taken up by a date which is more than 3 months but less than 12 months after the close date of the competition, unless otherwise stated in the interaction information the Promoter will contact the winner on the phone number (or other method of contact (if appropriate)) they provided, calling at different times on weekdays and at least once at the weekend over a two week period or as indicated in the interaction information.

5.4.In the event that the winner cannot be contacted or successful contact is not made within the time periods set out in clauses 5.1 to 5.3 above (as applicable) or if the winner fails to provide an address for delivery of the prize or fails to meet any of the eligibility requirements or is otherwise unable to comply with the interaction terms and conditions, this may result in forfeiture of the prize and the Promoter reserves the right to disqualify that entrant (without further liability to that entrant) and offer the prize to the next eligible entrant and thereafter until a winner is found.

5.5.Any entrant and/or winner must comply with any directions given to him or her by the Promoter, prize provider(s) and/or their agents and with all relevant laws, rules and regulations, restrictions, itinerary, and where applicable, compliance with the Ofcom Broadcasting Code. Failure to comply with instructions, itineraries, rules, restrictions, requirements, laws and guidelines may result in an invalid entry and/or forfeiture of the prize.

    ITV answer format
If for example the answer is "B - Lemon"

Then all these answers would be acceptable

    B
    B Lemon
    Lemon

Only taking part of a prize
we would not require any winner to take up all elements of the prize should they choose not to take up a certain prize element (although we reserve the right to ask the winner to confirm this in writing).
