NatWest select silver to advantage gold upgrade rejected

I've been a customer with NatWest for a couple of years now and have just had a letter telling me my application to upgrade my account from a select silver to advantage gold has been rejected because I don't fit their criteria.

I've recently discovered though that when I cancelled my O2 home phone in March 2011 they didn't cancel it properly and continued charging me, they then placed a default on my credit file for £78 which currently shows as outstanding. I've contacted them about this and O2 admit this is a mistake and are sorting the removal of the default which they claim could take up to 60 days  in the meantime they've sent me a letter confirming their mistake and outlining their actions.

Now what I'm wondering is, is this default the likely cause of my rejection, as there's no other problems with my credit file and I've never been charged or gone overdrawn while I've been with NatWest. As the letter says, if I'm not happy I should take the rejection letter into my branch and ask to speak to someone about it, if I take my letter from O2 how likely am I to get this decision overturned?

Is there a specific reason you need the upgrade account, Will you miss out on something that you will use day to day basis.

We have a three week wedding in Cuba, a holiday in France and a further two weeks in Cape Verde all in the next year so thought the travel insurance would come in handy, so too the peace of mind of the breakdown cover along with the two smartphones I currently insure with them. Didn't think it was a bad deal for an extra £4.95 a month.

I've just applied online for an Advantage Gold account (new customer) - just went through the online process then accept T&Cs - then arrived at a screen to say -

Good news - you're eligible for this account (with Open an Advantage Gold Account heading at the top still). Now we need to confirm your identity so that we can open your account as fast as possible.

I used the fast track system so had my credit card and passport at the ready. I entered these details, then came to a screen to instruct me to set up my Natwest PIN and Password (also on screen it gave me my Natwest customer number), then the next screen, offered to transfer old bank over, so i completed these, then hit next and came to a screen to say i have to go into a branch and present ONE item from Table A only then they can complete setting my account up.

So what the hell is this all about? I will go into the branch with my passport and say whats the point of offering the fast track service. I reckon this is a con just to get me in branch to up sell products because i declined the overdraft and Credit card options.

Also, I am assuming that I will be getting the lovely Purple card rather than Blue? So have i scored high enough to get the gold account?

It's possible they just couldn't verify the information you gave them
    For everthing else there's mastercard.
    For clampers there's Barclaycard.

My mate has the gold advantage account with natwest and his debit card is blue.
You haven't asked for an OD which to me means you'll get the blue card and not the purple card.
  • Any idea what criteria they have that would allow me to have a select silver account but not an advantage gold? The only thing I can think of is this default. Think I'll pop into my branch to ask.

It's not like that with natwest,if you qualify for a current account then it's basically upto you what added account you want if that's what you require.
Anyone can have a silver or gold account with natwest if they qualify for their current account.

Ps natwest will give people with not so good credit history's the silver or gold account but it will come with no credit facilities.
