As long as it's available to you, stay in it and try to be happy that you've got the pension. It's one of the best pension schemes available in the country, with a far lower cost for amount of benefit received than is normal in normal private sector deals.

Try to avoid being discouraged by the fuss that crops up from time to time about things getting worse or not staying as good or whatever else. For as long as you're in the job, you can't beat it.

There are definitely negatives to the job but the pension isn't one of them.

To help put it in context, those in today's normal private sector schemes get to put in their money and some from their employer, but much less than in your case, then take the risk of the investments they pick going up and down and finally usually buy an annuity that pays out a lot less for the same amount of money. You're getting far more certainty and protection at much lower cost to you. Still some uncertainty in there but you're way better off in that aspect than the private sector.

Stay in the pension as long as youa re an officer. Every year you 'earn' add to your Police pension is priceless. Nothing you could do with your contributions would even begin to approach the benefits.

    So stay in.
