Am i entitled to compensation or something? (really long)

Hi, im new here and this is my first post, Im sorry for it being so long. okay so basically I woke up on Saturday morning, checked my online banking to realise my partners wages hadn't been payed in nor was working tax credits. I rang tax credits to see why we hadn't received it and his employer. both people who I spoke to said the money had been sent out and accepted by the bank.

So I rang the bank to see what was going on, after 1 hour on the phone to santander which is a 0845 number I didn't get anywere. (i was charged for this call) all they basically said wwas there is a block on my account. couldn't tell me why. but the block was stopping money from being payed in or taking out. I had enough and went in to town to try and sort the situation out, I was told the block was an error they had made. nothing to do with me at all. someone that works with them accidentally done it. they said the're was nothing they could do until Tuesday as it was bank holiday weekend. keep in mind I was £5 overdrawn, have a 4 year old and was relying on that money to get my food shoppping, gas and electric.

They said there was nothing they could do so I had to go all the way through bank holiday weekend with no money at all, we wer relying on that money as most people do with there wages. :( I also had a payday loan that was due out on the 25th which was our payday. obviously as they have blocked the account no money was in there and the company who I got the loan from couldn't get payed back, I'm now having to pay £60 interest so far as they still haven't received there money. this is the banks fault not mine. because some idiot can't do there job properly I'm being charged interest on my loan and it will continue to go up until I get my bank sorted. don't you think santander should be dealing with the interest as it is there fault?

My baby is due in a few weeks and I really can't afford to pay for someone else's mistake. it's bad enough I've had to go all weekend without nothing. all our plans for bank holiday weekend were ruined because of this. anyway I went in to the bank today to see if the block had been lifted and they said no. hopefully by the and of the day. i asked where iur money had gone if not in account and they said it would of been regected by the account and sent back to the originator. so my partner rang his employer and I rang tax credits and they haven't received the money back at there end yet. they said it can take 5 days to be sent back to them. and a further 2 or 3 days to reach us again. obviously we have went all weekend without money and by the looks of it we won't be receiving the wages or tax credits until next week.

By the way this is over £1000 I'm talking about not a few quid. so now we have to go longer without anything andtl the payday loan will continue to charge me more interest until I get my money back all because of santander. really not happy. my baby could be here anytime and I really don't need this stress..... (also i only took payday loan out as my washing machine stopped working and i need one asap) Thanks for all your help.

I find it strange that a block cannot be listed straight away by them. I would guess that it must be their credit services team that have done this.
I would think that they would be working all over the bank holiday on the telephone side.

Clearly needs to be raised as a complaint.

Why did you spend an hour on an 0845 number and not ring a proper geograpic number which most likely would have been free?
    For everthing else there's mastercard.
    For clampers there's Barclaycard.

As youre a new poster, please take this as constructive advice.

Your post is very difficult to read because it is in one whole block (no pun intended) You really need to pop a few paragraphs in it.

You can press the edit button and do this.

For a generic number instead of this 0845 number go to Saynoto0870 and look for an alternative.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Have you tried your local Citiziens Advice Bureau? Seems to me you might need some personal help.

CAB are also on MSE, but popping into your local office might be faster.

Good luck with getting it sorted
  • Firstly can you clarify that the account is in joint names?
  • Call your bank or make a written complaint detailing how you've lost out, e.g. no money for shopping, interest on PDL, had to go to the branch, had to call the bank, delays & hassle caused by having to have the money re-sent by HMRC/employers etc.
    I work for Natwest.
  • Until we have clarification that the account is joint the bank has good cause to block the account - somebody else's money going through it.

OP has not yet responded to my question.
  • yes this is a joint account, also like I said the bank told me it was there error and nothing to do with Us at all.

I would be changing your Direct Debit dates, putting them the day of, or near to, your pay day is asking for trouble.

You should have your DDs at least a week after.
