Best small automatic car?

Hello All,

My elderly mum is finding gear changes increasingly tricky as the arthritis in her hands and shoulders worsens, so she is thinking of trading in her aged Micra for an automatic.

She is looking to buy a new car, and wants something small, reliable and preferably with a good long warranty or servicing deal. She isn't bothered about the badge and will consider any makes.

Can anyone make any recommendations for the best automatic for her?

Many thanks,
Roberta

  • the most important thing is make sure she gets a real torque converter automatic and not the devils design currently doing the rounds, the automated manual hell box, featuring in most of the mainstream european makers cars.

Hyundai and Kia offer real torque converter autos as do Suzuki and Chevrolet.

Kia has by far the longest warranty, so Kia Rio or Picanto would be as good as any, remember warranty transferable so a 2 year old Kia Picanto that has been serviced as per the book would still have 5 years warranty and be a cheap and reliable used car.

Definitely get something Korean or Japanese. The small Asian automatics have additional benefits such as light power steering and controls compared to the beefier stuff from the European cars.

In my personal opinion (as someone who drives all manner of cars for his job), the best conventional autobox on any new car is the Hyundai i30, and it's a damn good car, albeit a bit basic.

God it hurts to say that as a life-long VW fan.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Nissan Note is a nice wee auto.

Also, slightly elevated driving position so good view of the road and easy to get in/out of.

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
