Hi all,

the quandry of a new car continues, although to be fair we are doing better than before so thats positive right

we finally decided on a vauxhall Astra 61 plate 2.0 CDTI ecoflex sri ( start stop technology) it has just over 10,000 miles on the clock and is for sale for £13,500 we have secured a £12,000 loan (6.3%) and will pay the other £1,500 from savings. we have paid £100 deposit with the balance to pay when we pick it up

now the only problems that make the car less than perfect for us ( according to my husband) are

it doesnt have bluetooth, usb and something else which i cant remember lol

but last night after agreeing to buy it my husband had a wee look online and saw the same car for £1,500 cheaper in a few different places, we got a phone call today from the company we bought the car from asking us when we were gonna pop in and pay the rest and husband said "well to be honest we are not sure if we will we have seen the same car for £1,500 less and it has less milage on the clock as well ( the other milage was 5800 which is a considerable amount less)

can anyone offer advice on how we would go about haggling to get this car at a lower price ( even if we got it for £1,000 less that would help) my husband says if we dont get a good deal we are walking away as after all the kia proceed has the usb and bluetooth etc in it ( i thought the kia was ok but am a bit wary of buying it ) if we do walk away will we get the £100 deposit back ?

any help gratefully recieved

thanks

So you agreed to buy a car and paid £100 deposit and changed your mind.

You can walk away losing the £100 and buy the other car £1500 cheaper and move on.

You could ask the dealer to reduce the price or you will walk away and be prepared to walk away if he says no.

You will have this car for a while so you need to be happy about paying back £12,000 of debt.

Now you have paid teh deposit i doubt they will do any other deal.

Go and buy the other car and lose the deposit. But the other car may not be any better.

5,000 miles or 10,000 miles its nothing when a car can do 150,000 miles without issues.

But you may find the 5,000 mile one has done 99% of its miles in short stop start journey's and the clutch will need replacing in half the miles of the 10,000 mile car.

I know someone burn out a brand new clutch in less than 7000 miles.

that is basically exactly the situation tbh,

it was my husband that saw the other cars cheaper and has decided he doesnt want to pay the price we have been charged ( and i agree with him , but i tend not to look at prices after i have bought something)

i think if we were going to make a saving of £1,500 then we would take the £100 hit ( would rather not obvioulsy) but we would still be £1,400 up

i was really looking for any tips in haggling i am not very good at it

you make a very valid point about the clutch etc

as per the highlighted bit ... i wish this were true about the car we have currently, it's staggered it's way to 110,000 miles and really shouldve been scrapped at just over 40,000 miles... tbh i think this is where the whole crux of getting a new car comes from

we have had nothing but bother with the car we have currently to the extent that i feel that we may be feeling paralysed about getting another car ... we spent over £10k on the other car and have had to spend thousands fixing it every year, we just get something else fixed and then we say we will get our moneys worth out of what we have just spent and low and behold within months we are spending hundreds again

You need to choose your car carefully and do your research before parting with cash.

As for haggling, if theres a choice of simliar cars at different dealerships then choose the nearest two that you feel you would get the best service from when/if the thing needs work. Say you found the same/similar car for a little less and see what the salesperson says and be prepared to walk away if you feel he isnt doing enough for you, he may only be able to throw in a free service after 6 months, or floor mats or full proffessional valet, full tank of fuel and 6 months road rent or all the above. Dont say, sticker price is £13,000, how much for cash? I mean, how else are you going to pay for it, buttons?!

I know that Vauxhall dealers for instance are or were doing 0% finance. Over 5 years would save you a fair bit if you are paying 6% interest on the loan!

I wouldnt buy a car just because it had a USB port tho....and not overly keen on buying a Kia, althoug not sure if the new ones are any better than the past offerings!

Good luck in whatever you decide.

Always wondered who these people were spending £10k+ on a vauxhall. No one I know has ever owned up to it.

Kia is the better car imo, although you'll want to keep it till its falling to bits (which may take a while) as you'll get fack all for it at trade in in 3 years.
