Yes, my Mum has made similar, hurtful, style statements to me over the years..... (Grits teeth). Ranging from;- 'no, you can't grow your hair long as it won't suit you. You have a big, long face.' To;- 'dyed blonde hair looks so tarty and cheap, especially when the roots come through a bit...' My Mum went from brunette to almost platinum blonde some years later, and I smile wryly remembering her words. When I had a very short bob years ago I used to wear massive earrings, often clip-ons, and they looked very chic, I thought. Oh and I and wear specs, too. Think back to Magenta Devine, the presenter, she was a bit of a style icon of mine!!!!

I hadn't heard of Magenta Devine but upon Googling she is going to be a style icon for me too :D

I do think whatever you wear comes down to attitude at the end of the day. We all have different tastes and there are always going to be some people who criticise you for looking a certain way. As long as you are happy with what you are wearing, you will ooze confidence and rock the look anyway.

I for one love statement glasses with statement earrings. I also wear dramatic make up and have an unnatural hair colour, so I imagine I'm not many people's cup of tea. But I like it, so I do it anyway.

Personally I'm still hoping OP retaliates with the biggest hoops she can find!

I was told once (nastly, thanks mum) that I had a small face with a big nose so earrings with a bob and glasses make your face look like its over crowded like a cheap stall at a jumble sale.

    Does anyone wear both ?

Absolutely. And I think you'd have to have a freakishly small face for it to look overcrowded with just glasses and earrings. I have never heard of such a thing. Your mother sounds like a delightful person!

Glasses rules seem to change all the time anyway. I remember back in the 1980s when glasses were huge the rule was that the top of the glasses should be at the same level or higher than your eyebrows or you'd look surprised. I remember seeing that written in several magazines as well as leaflets in the opticians. Yet, now I think you'd struggle to find glasses that are so big they go higher than your eyebrows. I don't think that today's glasses wearers all look surprised!

    Wow guys,

Thanks for all the replies. It’s really great to get feedback. My mother has always had a habit of making any of my wardrobe choices out to be dire :D

My favourite (because I knew looked ace in them) Why are you wearing knee high boots? You are too short for them so they make you look like a gnome in waders.:rotfl:

As I am getting fit, losing weight (24lb so far) and looking great. So I am experimenting more with fashion. I have styled, cut and highlighted my hair, had my eyebrows done, bought new makeup and some fab new clothes and shoes. So it’s time to stop hearing my mother huffs of disapproval when I try stuff on and start hearing my OHs wolf whistles :D

(PS I should mention - my mother has borderline NPD – I am and have been low contact for a while)
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...

That's the spirit! Pleased to hear you've been decreasing contact- it's not healthy to be near someone critical. Her insults are ridiculous anyway, and incidentally I think gnomes are adorable. They just make me think of small cute things. Hardly a negative thing :D

Also shaking head at your mum's comments and can understand why you're seeing less of her!

I wear rimless glasses - I would love to try out the 'statement' ones but don't think they look right on me as I'm pale and have small features. I tend to wear small earrings, but that's partly because I'm not really into jewellery - I don't wear any other than earrings as I just feel it gets in my way lol.

And I have a whole lot of very long curly hair going on so goodness knows what your mother would make of me :rotfl:

    Absolutely :T :T

(agreed the almost makeupless, almost accessory-less, heel-hating long-haired hippie-ish chick at the opposite end of the spectrum!) :)

Well done on your weight loss and revamp:D I don't have anything to add to the fab comments already on this thread about the glasses and earrings but just want to wish you luck in dealsing with a person with NPD, I had one of those people in my life for a long time (mine had NSPD and was seriously dangerous) after trying so many things to remove myself and my dd from them full no contact was the only thing that worked but thats a whole other thread;) Best of luck hun, the saying "success is the best therapy" has kept me motivated and strong in times of weakness:)
