Glasses and earrings...

Today I have on Glasses and a set of medium sized black hoops though i am not normaly a jewlery wearer.

However you know when someone has said something to you and it lodges in your brain....

I was told once (nastly, thanks mum) that I had a small face with a big nose so earrings with a bob and glasses make your face look like its over crowded like a cheap stall at a jumble sale.

Does anyone wear both ?
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...

What a horrible thing to say! So long as the specs and earrings are nice, I don't see why anyone would think they look bad. I have a friend who wears large gold hoops with specs and short hair, and she looks great.

Black hoops sound really stylish, and should go with any style of glasses.

And even if you wore specs and earrings that looked like they came from a unsold end-of-day job-lot at Pontefract market, if you feel good in them then so what?

    :p
  • I wear glasses sometimes . I have a bob, I love wearing earrings and don't go out without them . I also have a nose which isn't small . It's true that an unkind remark can stay in our minds forever . Remember the compliments you've had too and leave the nasty comments in the past . Make the best of what you've got . Like and accept yourself , that's what matters .
  • Your mum does have a great way with words though....

Words fail me re: your mother:eek:
I think it depends what they are and where you're wearing them. Diamonds to work could be overkill and plastic danglies a tad chav anywhere but on the beach.

I wear sunglasses a lot to protect my eyes and I don't wear danglies in case I rip them out my ears when taking the shades off.

Haven't seen any jumble sales since my youth, so am guessing the remark was made a while ago.

Personally, I think fashion/materials have come a long way in that time, so even if it were true once upon a time, if you feel good in them, you probably look great.

I wear glasses and have an earring. No one has ever said anything wrong about it.

Utter tosh. I always wear earrings- all of them are either danglies, hoops or huge studs. I wear big cat eye glasses and I also have a bob hair cut, a small face, and whilst I would hestitate to call it big I certainly don't have a snubby nose.

With the bob I feel the need to wear even bigger earrings than usual because I have hair in front of my ears. I regularly get called Pat Butcher for my oversized earrings... but I don't care. I feel so naked without them I have to buy a cheap pair if I'm out and realise I've forgotten to put them in that morning.

Your mother's comment reminded me of this conversation in the TV show 'The Mighty Boosh':

    Vince: Your head's a bit like a man's thigh.
Howard: What? There's such a thing as having too much going on in your face, you know. All a bit too busy. All the features jostlin' for position. Yeah? The eyes screaming out, the nose. Very visually noisy, your face.
    Vince: Visually noisy?
Howard: Mm, it's like a brass band under a wig.
    Vince: Yeah?
Howard: Marching towards me every day.

Vince and his actor Noel Fielding, despite their 'visually noisy' face, are considered good-looking by a lot of people. So wear as much jewellery as you want :) If I got a comment like that I'd be tempted to wear huger glasses and earrings!

It might look like a cheap stall at a jumble sale if you made ill advised choices of glasses and/ or earrings, but that goes for everyone regardless of hairstyle or nose shape.

  • Yes, my Mum has made similar, hurtful, style statements to me over the years..... (Grits teeth). Ranging from;- 'no, you can't grow your hair long as it won't suit you. You have a big, long face.' To;- 'dyed blonde hair looks so tarty and cheap, especially when the roots come through a bit...' My Mum went from brunette to almost platinum blonde some years later, and I smile wryly remembering her words. When I had a very short bob years ago I used to wear massive earrings, often clip-ons, and they looked very chic, I thought. Oh and I and wear specs, too. Think back to Magenta Devine, the presenter, she was a bit of a style icon of mine!!!!

Yep, another specs and earring wearer! My glasses are rimless, though.

When I wore heavier frames I tended to go for subtle earrings, now I just choose what suits the clothes I am wearing.
