Advice / IP Phone

I'm looking to change my home phone, is there a IP phone that I can plug into my router and is continously connected to Internet through Broadband (So I dont have to leave my computer on ?).

Thx, I'm fed up paying £11 rental for £3 worth of calls !!!

If you have ADSL, you'll still need the landline to get the broadband.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

If you have cable broadband you can dump the landline.

There are several IP phones that you just plug into the router, though I find using an ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter) such as the Linksys PAP2 is a more ideal solution, allows you to connect up all your regular phones.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

You could use your normal DECT cordless phone or normal corded phone with an adapter, such as the Linksys PAP2 or other Linksys Sipura devices - for example: http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=3508

    or

    http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=3873

The ATA is a better solution I think, as you can simply continue to use your regular phones, daisy chain them like you do your normal line. You may have 4 phones attached to your landline, if you dump your landline you simply connect them up to the ATA instead, so once set up it would appear like a regular phone service.

You can buy an IP phone, but then if you want more than one phone you'd have to buy another IP phone and another - http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=3711

Cheaper to buy an ATA and use your current phone you use for your landline service.

Myself, I no longer have a landline, as I have cable I have a PAP2 ATA plugged into my router and my DECT and corded phones connected up.

If you don't use the phone much, then you could look at https://www.sipgate.co.uk or http://www.voiptalk.org/reallyvoip no monthly fee, incoming phone number area code of your choice, you just pay 1.19p/min with Sipgate and 1.4p/min with VoIPTalk to UK landlines.

There's https://www.voip.co.uk that offer for £20 per year, evening and weekend calls included (each call up to 60 mins, hang up and redial if you don't want to pay) and then daytime calls at 2p each for 60 mins .

https://www.voipdiscount.com is another, though if you want an incoming number, this is possible for no charge if you know where to look.

The above services can be used on the ATAs mentioned or on the IP phone, but as you can see the ATA would be the better solution. The linksys devices are the most versatile, but can be a little daunting at first to set up, but if you did decide to go with a linksys ATA I could give you the required settings for a good working UK set-up.
