Getting his number changed might, for a time, reduce the number of such calls he receives but it won't stop the misuse of his Debit Card details.

If he, by chance, happens to lose his card, you can report that loss to the bank on his behalf (or as him more likely) and they'll put a block on that card and issue an new one - with a different number.

He may give out the new number but at least you'll have stopped one scammer for a while.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Hi,

Definately change his number which is free. Put it on the TPS, again this is free (Generally only lasts 12 months)
Then perhaps buy this - http://www.callblocker.co.uk/

Anonymous call rejection is an answer - if the calls he receives are mainly from a withheld number, but that is £4 per month. People calling him can dial1470 before they call him to show their number.
I'm sure the lifeline company have a procedure for dealing with people with anonymous call rejection.
Sky don't NEED his number. If they call his number and notice it's changed then they will contact him anyway via letter.

Perhaps in future leave him a credit card instead of a debit card - you can have these charges from a credit card refunded instantly in a dispute case.

This does not stop all spam calls. I am registered - it stops calls from companies who use database information but some companies just have a long list of every number & work down it. I always ask how they have got my number and could they remove it and stop bothering me.

TPS registration does not expire for residential users - it's permanent (unless you cancel it).
15. How do I de-register my telephone number from the TPS?

If you have registered a telephone number onto the TPS and now wish for it to be removed from the file, please e-mail your details to tps@dma.org.uk

16. Do I need to renew my subscription with the TPS?

If you have registered a residential number or a number belonging to a sole trader or (except in Scotland) partnership, you do not need to renew.

Maybe it's been recently changed. The rep on BT's Nuisance call advice line ( 0800 661 441) said it needs to be renewed annually.

I think that just demonstrates the (lack of) quality of advice given by BT.
