Pension Credits under 65 - H.Benefit reduction next April?

I read on another thread that Housing and Council Tax benefit for people under retirement age might be reduced to 75% next April - is this connected with a story I heard on the news that these benefits are to be transferred in the new year to local budgets?

I am receiving Pension Guarantee Credits, and full HB and CTB, but I have two years to go until retirement age. A 25% reduction in HB and CTB will represent a £30 a week cut in my income

Comments

  • im unsure about the HB aspect but ctb is being transfered next year, but i think it will be maintained at 100% for pensioners and "vunerable"people but the govt hasnt defined "vunerable"
it seems that in areas where there are alot of pensioners others may suffer a cut in benefits but this has been estimated as low as £38 a year
  • Hi

Payments for CTB will be put in hands of local Councils from next April. They have been asked to make 10% savings. pensioners will not be affected.

I am currently claiming CTB and had a letter from my Council a few weeks ago explaining the situation, they said they were writing to all those affected by the changes.

My housemate, who is 63 and on PC, did not get a copy of this letter.

I am therefore assuming that those on PC will be treated as Pensioners.

Our council is holding a drop in session this week to answer any questions about the changes. I will go along and try and get a definitive answer!

Hope this helps, but remember you must ask your own Council what they intend to do, try looking on their website.
  • If you are on Pension Credit, you will not be affected by any reduction in Council Tax benefit affected by these reductions. You will continue to be entitled to 100% relief so long as you remain on Guaranteed Pension Credit.

However, many on Pension Credit will be affected by the reductions in Housing Allowance, which are slowly creeping into calculations. Some on PC are up to £10 a week worse off.
