Would you take a 3-year-old to see a 3D film?

I'm thinking of taking my 3-year-old to the cinema for the first time in a few days and I was wondering about going to see Brave 3D. I think if the film was entertaining enough she'd sit through the whole thing, but I'm not sure how well she'd get on with the 3D glasses (or if it's even safe for a child of that age).

Has anybody done this? Because on the day I want to go it's either Brave 3D or The Lorax, and I know which one I'd prefer to see...

No. Go for the 2D showing. It's not safe for under 8s.

ETA - I'm doing my dissertation on 3d cinema films :)

Do you have a link with the details of that?

We go to the cinema quite often so I'm really curious about that as my girls love 3D films.

My youngest was 4 when she first went to the cinema; we watched Walle (2D). She sat through the first half an hour max, then started fidgeting, talking, wanting to go to the toilet. In hindsight, I wouldn't have taken her as their attention span at such a young age may only be for half an hour or so.
I waited until she was 5 to go again (and even now she fidgets and she is 7)
    Hope this helps x

I can't imagine any 3 year old sitting through a film, 3d or not. Films these days, even films like Brave and The Lorax rely on understanding the plot. Can't imagine a 3 year old keeping the glasses on for long either, 3d films without glasses are pretty much unwatchable really. Don't waste the money, either see it in 2d or wait till it's out on DVD.

Urg the regular version isn't showing on Thursday...

Edit - my son saw his first 3D film at around age 5 and he was fine, but my daughter has never even been to the cinema - but she'll sit through a DVD at home most of the time.

Yeah it should be fine just the little ones take their glasses on and off sometimes but you little one should enjoy it. If its too daunting im sure if you ask nicely theyll let you swap to another film if seat numbers allow.

Does your lo watch tv at home? If she'd sit through that then she'll likely sit through a film. Mine have always loved the cinema. Wouldn't take the boy yet though as he has an attention span of about 3 minutes.

Mine were all 3 when I first took them. Had to come out after 10 minutes with the eldest as he wouldn't sit down and kept running along the row taking down the seats. :o The next time he was fine. Two of the other ones were scared at the adverts the first time (too loud), and my daughter cried at Ursula from the Little Mermaid.

Mine all love the cinema now and I don't think 3 is too young to get them started. Not sure about the 3D though. I've been to see a few and the novelty has definitely worn off - plus they give me a headache.

I'll see if I can find some of the papers I'm using, give me a mo. The trouble is we have no idea how the current 3d technology affects eyes as it's a different system to the previous ones that have been released. The current system works on converging two images that are very slightly misaligned - we have NO idea what the effect could be on a child, very little idea of the effect of it on an adult (but it's generally accepted that adult eyes are not massively affected it by it). For all we know 3d images could promote muscle weaknesses in the eyes, or change the shape of the eyes (as the muscles are working harder to pull the vision into focus). 3D stimuli do however, when used long term (for periods of longer than about 45 minutes we think) cause discomfort and visual fatigue in adults - what could that be doing to a developing eye?

http://www.journalofvision.org/content/11/8/11 is a good one to read if you can get into it :)

Personally since starting my dissertation I've not been to see anything in 3D, I used to but now I notice all the little irksome bits.

Brave is not a Shrek style movie and a three year old wouldn't understand it. It is quite dark in places and as it has a 3D version needs elements to make use of the 3D i.e. things jumping out if the screen when you least expect it, not all pleasant for a small child, hence its PG rating.

Our daughter who is six drove me mad to see it. I took her to see it in 2D and she ended up in tears and had bad dreams for a couple of nights.
