I'm going on holiday in europe and i want to be able to use my smartphone without incurring any extra charges over and above my virgin mobile monthly contract.
all i want to do is surfing net and taking photos. I'm also trying to figure out the cheapest way to communicate with people back in the uk.
If i untick data roaming, does that mean i cannot use the net abroad, except in a wifi hotspot?
any advice would be great

Unlock your phone and use a local SIM or buy a PAYG SIM here before you go.0

Unticking data roaming should indeed stop your internet working abroad, but I always switch off internet altogether to make sure and I have it disabled abroad by my provider (Three).
Just use wi-fi and Skype to communicate. :-)0 -
Just untick data roaming .......... job done ! My wife and I took our new smartphones with us to Chicago earlier this year, we used the hotels free wifi to email and used hugmail to send postcards to the older folks etc. My wife used facebook most of the time to keep in touch. I will use Skype next time. We did do a small amount of texting which did cost us a little extra, but well within our budget !

Just hope the OP doesn't end up posting in the Mobile Phones thread complaining about a huge bill.....0

To be really on the safe side, take the simcard out of the phone before you leave. You should still be able to use wifi and the other smartphone features but no risk of being charged for calls or data0
