Part time work for a student

Hi,
I'm desperately looking for part time work.
I will be a student come September, and feel that I'm not doing all that I could be.
I have looked on Direct Gov, and there were a few that I will need to call tomorrow. However most of the jobs were fro carers which is something that I have never done, and I do not have a car.
I have called a lot of the shops in my local town, or looked on their websites for vacancies - what else can I do?
What tricks am I missing?
Many thanks,

Just keep looking, over the next few weeks the shops will be advertising for Christmas staff to start soon! I also recommend reed.co.uk for job advertisements and some smaller companies advertise on gumtree because it's free! Also, if your new university has an online job portal (most do), have a look on there because they usually have a really good selection of jobs.0

Are you a college or uni student? This may impact on how much time you have available to work. What are you studying - are you hoping to undertake work that will add to your long-term plan post education, or just keen to earn extra money? You might want to consider local charities, for example Barnardos, Action for Children, The Children's Society etc may all have projects which they recruit for through their own recruitment websites - google each charity both national and any local ones to your area to see if there are any relevant vacancies. Also sign up for your local authority job vacancy mailshot.0

Ha ha should have said I'm a mature student at university.
I have to have time to earn or I won't be able to pay my rent, and fees. (I get four days a week off - so will manage to work 2) I worked part time on the market last year, but that's a no go this year.
It's been years since I worked any where but an office. Uni has jobs advertised but they are an hour away by train, and I think with an address as far away as mine that getting an interview for part time work will be hard. But I will have a word with a friend to see if I can put her local address down to get a foot in the door if I can't find anything local though - then 'move' after a week of employment.
I'm not willing to work in a 'trendy' bar I'm just too old, but have been looking at local working mens clubs, and bars out of town. - unfortunately all the pubs are so small they tend to be fully staffed with family / friends.
There is a Toby Carvery near here though....
Wold love a supermarket if only for the discount, and have handed in my CV to shop that is reopening in a larger premises when they have finished building it....

Contact the Careers Service of the Uni you're studying with. They will have loads of advice on part-time work, finding the right vacancies and combining work and studies. Most Careers Services also advertise vacancies too.
This is the link to Manchester Uni careers site. Obviously the detailed info on there concentrates on Manchester (which isn't much use unless that's where you're studying) but the general gist of the advice is sound and there's some links to some useful sites in addition to DirectGov.

Ooooh - just been on Gumtree, a right little goldmine. Nothing for me, but i'd never even though to look there.
There is a job selling photographs in clubs - not sure if I could hack the late nights though and drunk people when you're that sober are hard work...
Thanks.

Be careful with Gumtree. There are definitely some great jobs on there but it's also a favourite for scammers targetting students.

Hi Nimbo
Just to echo what others have said really, during September many stores will be advertising for temporary staff to help during the busy Christmas period.
Lots of places just put notes up in their window to advertise for staff. Arm yourself with a CV and hit the streets, I wouldn't even bother phoning around wasting your credit. A nice smile and friendly manner will get you noticed rather than a random telephone call to a fed up admin worker!
Have you got an Entertainer toy store near you? They are recruiting for temporary Christmas staff -- google careers.theentertainer.com (I am a new user and the site won't let me post a link)
Have you tried Toys R Us, Argos or Poundworld? Don't forget pubs or hotels either for bar/waiting staff to accomodate the Christmas parties.
Good luck.0 -

good words of wisdom - it had a load of pub jobs for the Toby Carvery I'm not qualified for most (cheffing) and bar manager full time though.... Called and the woman who answered was LOVELY. told me to pop a CV in, as they have things coming up all the time.
Will be careful with dodgy numbers, have to day I got all excited a job popped up that sounded perfect post 8 minutes ago - read through 2 pages, and realised it was in York (about 2.5 hours by train) so not worth the commute.
ho hum

I got all excited, then realised the toy shop isn't entertainer.....
But I will, got some 'nice' folders I'm eyeing for CV's and will get this perfected this week, and then will hand them out Friday after work so I look kind of smart....
Poundland, hadn't though of. oooh I'm getting all excited at the prospects now....

As Christmas is coming up look for the following.
Local hotels that are advertising party nights
The Post Office (temp posty jobs over christmas)
Are there any call centres local to you.
Have you considered babysitting, dog-walking.
Sign on for temp agencies that specialise in hotel and catering jobs.0
