ISP not taking money

I was chatting with a friend of mine this morning and he said that his Internet service provider had not taken money out of his account for 9 months he only became aware of it when they threatened to stop his service.
I asked him why he had not noticed this himself and he said that he rarely gets a bank statement and he just presumed that if there was any problem with payments they would have got back to him much sooner.
I do not know if this is right or not but I remember reading something that a ISP could not ask for back payments further than 6 months back

I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.

I think you'll find that a debt can be pursued for six years.0

Yes I was aware of that but I do remember reading something on a broadband forum that the ISP could not try and claim more than 6 months payments.
The direct debit was set up and they had taken payments initially but for some strange reason they stopped taking the money.
I can only presume that this was due to a mistake being made in their finance department.
On a personal note I pay with my credit card,A few months back I missed one payment due to being on holiday but they soon informed me that I need to pay up or get cut off.I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.0 -
Get him to confirm with his bank that the DD for the ISP is still active, and that they have not been rejecting any requests against that DD. (Better yet, get this confirmation from the bank in writing). That way the ISP can't (legally or morally) cut him off for non-payment.
Then get him to approach the ISP with this evidence. Make sure he has funds to cope with the ISP making a request for all the back-dated amounts owed - if not then the ISP will have to agree a payment plan. (If this is the ISPs fault then, I believe, they are duty-bound to accept such a proposal if full payment would cause undue hardship).0
